As some other reviewers said, the smell is pretty strong but do not exagerate.. it will go away a couple of days after you take them out of the plastic bag.. one just lose one of the rubber parts but i guess it is normal and it can be put back to the clamp. Other than that these are pretty sturdy and do the job greatly so i totally suggest them!UPDATE --I must say now after a couple of months using the clamps they are pretty stiff and well made, only complaint is the rubbers keep coming off all the time..

I received these clips a month or so ago and I haven't had a need to use them yet, but they feel very strong and sturdy and I'm confident they will do the job well. They do have an extremely strong rubber (car tire) smell that ha yet to go away and they've been in an outside storage room, unwrapped this whole time. I can see how they wild be distracting during a photo shoot. This is the reason for the 3 star rating.

Nice, big, strong clip hold any background to anything you can fit this clamp around - they don't MOVE once you put them on.Small downside is the terrible manufacturing smell - had to air them out over a week - can't use them in an enclosed studio without bothering your subject and feeling overpowered yourself.Buy them, clip them outside - forget you have them for a week or so, then remember to use them!

Well after ignoring all the other reviews suggesting these clamps literally stink, I went ahead and bought them anyways, and after leaving them in my apartment overnight I came home to stench so bad I almost called a Hazmat team out. I stuck them in ziplock bags but that still couldn't keep the smell out. Well after TWO MONTHS and leaving them outside, they still smell like a chemical/paint solution of some sort. Too bad as they work well.

The paint and rubber tips smelled like kerosene. I washed them with soap, baked them in the 100 degree sun for two weeks, and even popped them in the oven to bake out that smell. Never got rid of it. The rubber sticks to itself, so when attempting to open, they are so stuck you think you are going to break them. Get what you pay for.

Purchased these clips for photography work and cannot work in the same room these clips reside due to a very strong chemical smell. I attempted to clean the clips and air dry them for several days with no luck. I have had them in an open warehouse for several weeks and the chemical smell is still just as intense as the day I received them from Amazon. I have purchased several other Cowboy Studios products and have never encountered this kind of problem. Beware of this product if you have any sense of smell or chemical sensitivity.

I have tried to treat the terrible smell of the rubber with alcohol, with detergent. But all in vane, does't disappear after more than a month now.Functionally nothing to complaint.

The grip is almost to strong, and per another review, they do smell bad! I'm hoping the stink goes away. If so, they'll be worth the small amount I paid.
