Is there anyway to use the bulb without creating an account with cree? without internet? no hub needed but internet and signup required?

Accepted Answer

The way WiFi bulbs are implemented now, they require their manufacturers app to fully operate. THIS is what requires an internet connection since they all want to maintain control from their servers for full function. Its a shame because they *could* provide basic functions locally (if your phone and bulb were both on your local network only and communicated with a local IP address). The problem now with that scenario is that it requires a much smarter app on your phone (or PC) to give you full bulb control. This is what MATTER, the new standard is all about. 
  MATTER, when coupled with 'Thread' will allow for full local control of matter-compliant WiFi devices. So until MATTER is fully implemented and out there in the world (we're in the early stages), then WiFi devices will require signing up to a Vendor's app and letting them control the devices over the internet. For Alexa, they are basically connecting to Alexa (or Google and others) to receive the voice commands (through Alexa Skill) and essentially executing on their server from your account. (this is subject to my interpretation but petty sure that's how stuff works in the current WIFI smart devices).

Will this work on 5ghz wifi?

Accepted Answer

No, Connected Max bulbs must be paired to a 2.4 GHz WiFi network. If you have a multi-band or mesh router, which supports both a both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, you can must connect to the 2.4GHz band. For detailed instructions and more help, download the Connected Max Wireless Router Guide.

Will they work outside in cold weather?

The Cree Lighting web site for the Cree Lighting Connected Max Smart LED Bulb A19 60W Tunable White + Color Changing bulb shows a label with the following information:

"Suitable for use in operating environments ranging between -25C and +45C (-13F and +113F). Suitable for damp locations, but not for use where exposed directly to weather or water."

Compatible motion sensors?

If you have a smart hub (like smartthings hub from Samsung) and Alexa linked to your Samsung account, a Zwave/Zigby etc. motion sensor *should* work as a trigger for any device. This is accomplished via the Alexa skill for Samsung Smartthings but likely way beyond why you bought a WiFi, no hub required device to begin with! They would basically communicate via MotionSensor-2-Hub-2-Alexa-2-(AlexaSkill)manufacturer's server-2-bulb. My biggest assumpton is that Alexa skills aren't 'smart' and only serve to pass on communications to the 3rd party server. Kind of defeats the purpose of WiFi only hub-less devices but advantage of WiFi bulbs, they are much cheaper than ZWave & Zigby bulbs.
