Stokes Beginners guide to Dragonflies: better than expected
I have Stokes bird books, and they are great books. I'm also an avid dragonfly and damselfly watcher/photographer; however, the 2002 pocket-book with "beginner's guide" and only "Dragonflies" in it's title didn't seem like a book that I'd ever buy.I've taken thousands of photos; but identification can be complicated, and an ongoing process.Recently an internet article praised this book for it's great photos, the simplicity of identifications, as well as behaviors, regions, time of year to find them, anatomy, and habitats, etc..Although it came out in 2002, it was only $9.99, and was worth a try. It turns out that it will be a great book for my field bag, as well as home. The book covers dragonflies AND damselflies, and breaks them into groups, as well as pages of the individual species. Charts are clear and easy for quick answers, and for those learning the basics. The book covers over 100 species, some I wouldn't see in our area; yet it covers most dragonflies and damselflies that I would encounter. Great for beginners; but also a quick go-to for comparisons and IDs in the field.

Beautiful photos and information
The media could not be loaded. I will not give a bad review because of a binder. The company sent me another one but same thing happened. So will super glue the binder, no big deal......This book is one of the best most detailed for dragonflies and damselflies Ive ever seen. The photos are very detailed as well as the discrimination for taking outside on adventures.I'm very pleased with the maps and information.

The Guide I've Been Waiting For
This is the book I've been waiting for! I've been trying to learn about dragonflies for the past year and I found a very helpful guide with this book.First, the inside cover has a quick identification table that helps you determine the family of dragonfly or damselfly right away. Then using the color coding in the book, you can flip right to the section for that family. If that's not enough, there is another page inside that steps you through how to make the identification. In other words, what you should look for first, then next, and so on.There is also information on anatomy, behavior, life cycle, development, feeding habits and migration. And if you don't learn enough here, they've included a list of resources to learn more. The illustrations are larger than some guides and very clear. This easy to use guide includes "over 100 of the approximately 435 North American species"--some of the "most common, widespread and conspicuous," and does include representatives from each family. It even suggests how best to spend your time in the field. So get your guide and get out and identify dragonflies.

Should be a template for all guidebooks
I purchased this book after borrowing it from the library, because using it I quickly and easily identified several species stopping in my yard. The book's format facilitates recognition, starting with a clear charted overview of seven dragonfly and three damselfly families, followed by a recapitulation of the chart in succinct prose tidbits; this reiteration is as concise as the chart and thereby is not redundant, but instead affixes the characteristics of each family in the mind. And the meat of the book, individual species descriptions are highlighted with vivid photos of how each species appears to the human eye and is often all that is needed to confirm a species. There are no distorting enlargements that confuse rather than clarify. In the chart, color tabs indicate each family and are positioned on page edges so the book can be rapidly flipped through to find family groupings. This book is simple to use and is an efficSient means to quickly identifying dragonflies and damselflies.
