An Introduction To The Theory Of Numbers

A classic!
Another great classic, at undergraduate level, but worth dipping into time and time again. It lacks an Index but you can download one free on the internet.

A must have !
Don't expect a systematic treatise : Hardy guides you into the vast and intricate number theory via side tracks, leaving a few gaps to be filled in... Which allows him to cover an enormous range of topics, in his usual clear and concise style. In my opinion, this book should be read after Gauss's masterpiece "Disquisitiones Arithmeticae" and before Apostol's "Introduction to Analytical Number Theory".

An Introduction to the Theory of Numbers
I have owned a hard-back copy of this book (4th edition) since 1964, when I was still a student. At that time there were not many books on number theory available, and as far as I remember, Hardy-Wright used to be recommended as the best book in the field. I had always regretted the absence of an index, which made it very difficult to use the book.I have been aware of more recent editions of the book, and finally decided to purchase the latest edition a few days ago. What an improvement! Even though the old style notation and terminology has been preserved, the notes have been updated to include more recent results, and a a new chapter on elliptic curves has been added. An index is now in place, but it could be more detailed. One must not forget that the book is directed to students of mathematics and practising mathematicians. Comments made about the book by other people should be read with care.

Very good book.
My 17-year-old who likes Number Theory really likes this books. It's not his first Number Theory book but it doesn't matter. He's into it. So, he's happy, I"m happy.

Introduction?
It's a great book but don't think it is good for an introduction. I wouldn't recommend if you haven't studied number theory before. Some of the proofs are skipped and there are some arguments which seem to be missing that is crucial for the proofs. If you try really hard with the aid of other textbooks then you might get through it. Otherwise, it might take you hours to piece the proofs together. At least for my ordinary brain, it did.

Hardy_6
Greetings ... I recently visit England as well a member of my family that when I was a teenager order and purchase the Fifth Edition you can see in the Picture. This was before I enter to study Math in UCV, Caracas to then move to Italy and again get another degree. The Hardy book ... new Edition is good while I do not yet conquer ... but now has an Analytical Index (Good) ... but do not include in full ... seems neither partially explanations which Ramanujan cover like square and triangular numbers. This invite me to a new purchase ... "In the Spirit of Ramanujan" ...Without to disturb you too much ... there are another Mathematics ... Indeed there are Infinite Mathematics while the Duodecimal or Math of Spirit ... is the most important and in this "Egyptian" not new Math ... all puzzles get solutions. Thanks for any person worked to produce the Sixth Edition.

Bad binding
Just to let you know the paperback binding is poor quality. To keep the book open I have to bend it to the point of deformation.Get the hardback if you can afford to do so.

Beautiful book
The small amount I understood was great. This book is destined for super-brainy mathematicians.

but I must say I'm disappointed for how much I paid for it
This book is very highly rated, but I find the style very hard to follow. The authors use what I guess is very old notation, and that alone makes it nearly impossible for me to read, as I'm overly confused between the . used to denote multiplication, and . as the termination of a sentence. It's still on my shelf, and I hope to try to get over these things, but I must say I'm disappointed for how much I paid for it.
