is the reel just for braided line or can you use mono on it also

speaking only for me, and been retired for 5 years now- fish daily in summer time- except for my tenkara rod fishing- I use only open face reels including this ONE- if I had to use mono line I would never fish open face- braided line means no tangling fish nest on the spool- just say

Is the 1000 small enough for trout fishing? I like a nice compact reel.

The 1000 size in other reels usually take 140 of 4lb test or 110 of 6lb test. The 500 size reels are susceptible to line twist if your fishing spinners. I LIKE THE 1000 Size reel myself , just my preference. Good luck fishing.
