The Healthy Mind Toolkit: Simple Strategies to Get Out of Your Own Way and Enjoy Your Life

The author has a gift for translating the techniques of cognitive behavioral therapy.
There are a lot of self-help adaptations of cognitive behavioral techniques on the market, some of them quite good. So when I learned about The Healthy Mind Toolkit, I was curious about what might set it apart. What I came away with were three main things. The first is that the author's writing is really enjoyable to read. I suspected it would be because I was familiar with her previous book and with some of her online writing. She just has a tone that I enjoy, as it feels both warm and authoritative, like she knows what she's talking about and also understands the issues she's writing about. There's a very human feel to her writing.Second, she focuses on ways we get in our own way. We have goals for our relationships, our jobs, our way of being in the world, and yet we often find ourselves missing the marks we aim for. There's a whole chapter on identifying how we tend to self-sabotage, and then the rest of the book is about breaking those habits in different areas of our lives. The third thing that stood out is how familiar the author made the techniques feel. She has a gift for translating the techniques of CBT that doesn't feel "technique-y." She presents the thinking skills of cognitive therapy and the behavioral plans of behavior therapy, and they just feel like rules for good living. The same is true for her treatment of attachment style, which is a really important way to understand our closest relationships and how they relate to our earliest ones (usually with our parents). I haven't seen CBT and attachment style integrated like this before, and thought it was a really valuable approach.Like with most books of this type, it's best suited for someone who's ready to make some changes and works well independently. It's probably not going to be as helpful for the casual reader who just reads through it and moves on to the next book (as I've done with book like this before). But if you're willing to really dive in and do the exercises, you'll probably find it as useful as I did. I'll be interested to see what other readers thought about it.I know the author professionally and received a free advance digital copy to base my review on. I've since bought a copy to have on hand as it's such a helpful resource.

Not at all what I expected
This book was not a good fit for me. I found it confusing and difficult to follow. It may be great for someone else. I was hoping for clear concise tools but instead the toolkit felt short a few screws.

Lists, lists, lists to do list
Good for those that like to do lists, and that have not read many other self help books before. Clinical in nature.

Well worth the money, re-read for best results
I am one who has read many books on self-improvement. This book’s strength is helping you find your individual patterns of selfdefeating behavior and learn to stop it on the fly. Or recover well from a sabotaging Episode: Although I read only the first couple of chapters so far, it seems to meet the goal. The Author also wrote “The Anxiety Toolkot”which I am considering purchasing. The book provides multiple exercises and experimentsto help you help yourself, would recommendthis book.

Great self-check and correction tool
Dr. Boyes did an amazing job in stripping down the most common and uncommon ways we sabotage ourselves. She also provides perspective by way of examples on how these things manifest and how they can be overcome. I would highly recommend this book for everyone.

So many handy tips
Well researched. Nice that it’s based on actual published research and not just someone’s collection of ideas on how to live life.

Quality issues
I want to like it but the format of the book is paper back sized novel in poor quality and not a workbook making it extremely inconvenient. I normally finish books quite fast but it’s just not up to par with what I was expecting in terms of a “workbook”
