Great learning for those with some knowledge of programming
I teach programming and games development in a college. Most of my students come to Unity with some programming knowledge but limited development experience. This book emphasises good practical Unity programming and explains the reasons for choices made in programming. I have both editions of the book myself, recommend it to students and have just got our college library to buy a copy. The e-book is a useful extra as it can be carried around on a mobile device.

A great overview
Great book for getting started and understanding core concepts. I found the level of detail just right and this is a good companion to the online docs

A cookbook
This is a cookbook for a few techniques. It doesn't describe or provide any insight into the Unity system or environment. Sometimes it'll use a Unity term or introduce code which interacts with Unity without even a one-line description of what that sub-system is, is designed to do, or is generally used for. So, fine if you want to use the particular techniques used in the book, not otherwise. It also doesn't provide any insight into game design - along the lines of 'so, if you want to produce this kind of game, these are the Unity subsystems and techniques you might want to use, and this is why'. So, overall, a bit disappointing.

Lazy
The first part of this book is great but after its 50/50. From my point of view it looks like the author began to get lazy so rushed through the explanations of the code. I do recommend this book however it can be frustrating when he doesn't explain the code well.

Great book! Provides a decent overview of the essentials. Pleasant, no-nonsense style.
I like the book a lot. It focusses on the essentials and leaves out any unnecessary distractions, so that busy people like me can quickly get a good and fairly complete understanding of game development in Unity. Great book. Thanks a lot!

A much needed Unity Reference book and tutorial
This shows you what you need to do to build simple games in unity. Unity provides lots of video help, but to see how to do one thing, you have to watch hours of videos. They also provide lots of reference materials on line, which says what is available and what it does, but not what to use to get things done. (Same as everyone else). What is needed is some way of answering the question of "How do I do what I want to do?"And this book answer these questions well. It is deigned to teach someone how to use Unity. And it does that very well as well. Both Manning and O'reily produce very good Computer books. These could be college textbooks, but unlike textbooks, you don't need a professor to explain them to you.If you don't have a book that answers the basic question of "How do I build a Unity Game?", then this will be a great help.

If you are looking for a good instructional book without feeling overwhelmed, this is the one.
Admittedly I am not one who usually leaves reviews on products. I had to leave a review for this book. I am a java programmer and software architect so have a good background of OOP and development. However no experience at all with game development. This book goes step by step of the major areas required for developing a game. It is very clear and educational. The many best practice comments or call outs for why something was done in a certain way is invaluable. In addition the ability to download the project which has great comments added to the scripts helps ensure the reader completed the exercise correctly. If you are looking for a good book to get started without feeling overwhelmed this is the one.
