Life of a Masked Man
This three disc DVD covers the career of Rey Mysterio. It's a match compilation that's held together by an interview, hosted by Matt Striker, with Mysterio where he goes into his career. The interview segments get a decent amount of time and go into a good amount of detail. There are a lot of Mysterio's most famous matches that aren't included but that's only because they appear on Mysterio's first multi-disc DVD, The Biggest Little Man.Rey Mysterio Jr. and Konnan vs. La Parka and Psicosis - The first match comes from Mysterio's time in ECW, 1995-1996. It's clipped so we don't get the entire match. I was fine with that though, it wasn't a match I found myself invested in. There was some talent in the ring but the action didn't hold my attention any more than any other early Mysterio match. The action was fast paced with plenty of impressive moves but it's not one of my favourite styles of wrestling so I didn't mind the clipping.Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Juventud Guerrera - Also from ECW, this was a two out of three falls match. It was a good, fast paced match. Some of the action was a bit sloppy looking but at that speed it's kind of expected. They get a good amount of time to work with and keep it entertaining with some good reversals and near-falls. They do some things they probably wouldn't have been able to before coming to ECW such as moves into the guardrail and fighting through the crowd. They even ended up in the parking lot at one point during the third fall along with using a chair as a weapon. While that was common in ECW it wasn't in lucha libre so it did help make it feel different.Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Juventud Guerrera - This rematch was now from Rey's time in WCW, in 1996. It's an entertaining back and forth match. It's much shorter than the ECW one but they keep to the same style, outside of the no rules stuff they could do in ECW. As an early Mysterio match it's nothing special but overall it's still a quick-paced match with enjoyable action and a decisive finish.Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Chavo Guerrero Jr. - This was a better match than the previous ones. Chavo was big enough that he could slow Rey down and give the action time to breathe but also small and athletic enough that he could keep up with Rey's fast paced style. It's another fairly short match but it didn't feel too rushed; it worked for the match they were having. There were some good near-falls and a decisive finish. An enjoyable little match.Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Eddie Guerrero - This match is from a 1997 episode of Nitro. It was a very good match, the best so far. Eddie had the same style as Chavo which helped the match, but Eddie was also a better wrestler so that made for an even better match. It had strong action, a fast pace and plenty of counters and reversals. The finish came suddenly as it almost always did in Rey's WCW career. The match had a decent amount of time for a TV match, I definitely could have watched them go for longer but I wasn't disappointed.Rey Mysterio Jr.vs. Chris Jericho - Also from a 1997 Nitro, this was another good match. Not as good as the Eddie one, but still good. Jericho controlled most of the action and targeted Mysterio's back. Rey used his speed to try and reverse Jericho's offence and get back into the action. He didn't get much in but his known resilience kept it interesting anyway. It had a sudden but decisive finish and was an enjoyable match overall.Rey Mysterio Jr., Super Calo and Hector Garza vs. Psychosis, La Parka and Silver King - This one comes from 1998. It was held under lucha libre rules so no tagging was necessary. It was a good match. I wasn't as familiar with some of these guys so I wasn't as invested in the match but there was still some entertaining action. It was fast paced but not so fast that it became sloppy. It was easy enough to follow what was going on. It didn't last too long and had a decisive finish.Rey Mysterio Jr. and Billy Kidman vs. Eddie Guerrero and Juventud Guerrera - From a 1998 Nitro episode, this was a fun, back and forth tag match. It had a fast pace throughout and all of the action was enjoyable. It actually gets quite a lot of time for a cruiserweight match on Nitro. It had good reversals, near-falls and a good, satisfying finish. A strong, entertaining tag team match.Rey Mysterio and Edge vs. Los Guerreros - Mysterio was now in WWE and this comes from a 2002 episode of Smackdown. It was a number one contender's match for the tag titles. It was a great, competitive tag team match. The action was fast paced with some good team work on both sides. Los Guerreros used some really good heel tactics to try and stay ahead and Mysterio and Edge both looked good fighting back. There were some good near-falls and last second saves and they built to a very good finish.Rey Mysterio and Billy Kidman vs. The World's Greatest Tag Team - This comes from Vengeance 2003 and was for the WWE Tag Team Championship. It's another really strong tag team match full of entertaining action. Again, there's good teamwork on both sides, WGTT try to ground and grapple their opponents while Mysterio and Kidman use their faster, more high risk style to keep it competitive. There were plenty of reversals and some good saves and near-falls as they built towards a strong and decisive finish. great stuff.Rey Mysterio vs. Kurt Angle - From a 2004 Smackdown episode we have another good match. It's not quite as good as their match on Mysterio's first DVD(from Summerslam 2002) but it's Angle and Mysterio, so it's obviously going to be good. Angle controls a lot of the action with his superior wrestling, grounding Mysterio. Rey stays in the action by making his fast paced comebacks at just the right times. There's some interference towards the end while the referee is down, it's a shame because they were having a very good match but it didn't hurt the action too much and we did get a winner.Rey Mysterio and Rob Van Dam vs. Eddie Guerrero and Booker T - Also from Smackdown in 2004, this was for the WWE Tag Team Championship. It was another very good back and forth tag team match. The action was enjoyable from start to finish. The two teams felt very evenly matched, with plenty of reversals and some strong team work. They get a good amount of time and keep up an entertaining pace. There were some good near-falls and last second saves and some really entertaining cheating by Eddie towards the end. It also got a good, clean finish. A really fun match.Rey Mysterio vs. Eddie Guerrero - This was the opening match of Wrestlemania 21, the two were Tag Champions together at this time but wanted to find out who was better. It was a very good back and forth match as you'd probably expect from these two. Rey's mask was awkward here and kept slipping which caused some problems for him. It doesn't hurt the match and you probably wouldn't notice unless you knew about it but it is a shame because it meant that without that this could have been even better. Either way though this was a great way to kick off Wrestlemania. There were great sequences, plenty of reversals, counters and near-falls and a good, clean finish. A really good match.Rey Mysterio and Batista vs. MNM - This was for the WWE Tag Team Championship, from a Smackdown episode in 2005. There was a very uncomfortable angle revolving around this match that thankfully they only really allude to. It was an entertaining match. Batista and Rey were dominant for a while until MNM managed to isolate Mysterio with some good teamwork. It lasted a good amount of time and built to a clean and decisive finish. Ignoring the angle it was an enjoyable tag team match.Rey Mysterio vs Randy Orton - This was from No Way Out 2006 and the World Championship match Rey earnt by winning the Royal Rumble was on the line. It was another very good match. Orton controlled most of the action early on, bullying Mysterio around and attacking his arm. Mysterio made enough comebacks to keep it competitive and by the end they felt very evenly matched. There were good reversals and near-falls and a good, decisive finish that came very suddenly but they made that work. A really enjoyable match.Rey Mysterio vs. Chavo Guerrero - From Summerslam 2007, this was Mysterio's return from injury, in some strange silver body paint. There was some good psychology in this one, with Chavo targeting Rey's previously injured knee. Mysterio also tries to target Chavo's knee as revenge for injuring his knee in the first place. The action went back and forth, with Chavo controlling early on with the knee work but Rey getting more and more offence in as the match went on. There were some good reversals and counters on the way to a clean and satisfying finish.Rey Mysterio vs. Finlay - This was from Cyber Sunday 2007, the fans chose this to be a Stretcher match, although they used elements of all three options anyway. They had a section in the middle where they were both climbing to try and get Finlay's shillelagh which was one of the other options. I can see why they did that though and it still made sense that they'd want it as a weapon. It lasted a good amount of time without getting too repetitive. The finish unfortunately went a bit wrong but they covered for it well and made it work. I felt the stipulation possibly held them back a bit and a regular match might have been better, but this was still a good, entertaining fight.Rey Mysterio vs. Kane - From No Mercy 2008, if Mysterio lost this match he would have to unmask. It was a good match. Kane controlled most of the action thanks to his huge size advantage. Mysterio mainly had to rely on well timed counters to get his offence in and keep it a competitive match. There were some decent near-falls and they kept up a good pace. The finish was a bit disappointing, we didn't get a satisfying result, but all the action up until that point had been pretty enjoyable.Rey Mysterio vs. Chris Jericho - From Judgment Day 2009, this was for the Intercontinental Championship. It was the first match in an incredible trilogy of matches these two would have on Pay-Per-View in 2009. It was probably the worst in the series but it's still an amazing fight. The action is fantastic from start to finish, with plenty of reversals and counters, all timed perfectly. There are some very good near-falls and drama around Jericho's signature submission hold. Jericho tried to remove Mysterio's mask at some point, it didn't play a big part in this match but it planted seeds for their rematches when it would play a more prominent role. The finish was strong and decisive and this was just such a great match.Rey Mysterio vs. John Morrison - From a 2009 episode of Smackdown, this was an Intercontinental Championship match. Morrison was having fantastic matches on Smackdown around this time so this was a really good one. It was a fast paced match full of reversals, athletic manoeuvres and plenty of near-falls. They had a good amount of time to deliver an exciting match and built to a strong, clean finish.Rey Mysterio vs. Batista - This was a number one contender's match from a 2009 Smackdown. This was another good match. Batista was fairly dominant through a lot of it with his size and strength advantage. Mysterio used well timed counters to stay in the match and keep it competitive. It felt like he got in just the right amount of offence to stay in the fight while not having it be unbelievable by looking evenly matched with Batista. There were some good counters and convincing near-falls. They got a good amount of time and a clean finish.Rey Mysterio vs. Shawn Michaels - From a 2010 episode of Smackdown we have another very good back and forth match. It has a fast pace, as you'd expect from these two, and plenty of back and forth reversals and counters. It has the unique dynamic for Michaels as it was a rare occasion where he was fighting someone much smaller than him. Both men seemed very evenly matched, using their fast paced offence and also both targeting the knee of their opponent. It had some good near-falls as it built towards the finish but it didn't get a proper finish unfortunately. All the action up until that was great though.Rey Mysterio vs. The Undertaker - This comes from the 2010 Royal Rumble and was for the World Heavyweight Championship. It was a very good match. Early on it looked like it would be a squash with Undertaker controlling all the action. Thankfully Mysterio made a comeback and showed off his resilience to keep the match competitive. It wasn't the longest match but the time worked for the kind of match they were having. It featured some good near-falls and a strong and decisive finish. These two had some surprisingly strong chemistry.Rey Mysterio vs. Dolph Ziggler - This was an Elimination Chamber qualifying match from Smackdown in 2010. It was a good, fast paced back and forth match. It had a decent amount of time for a TV match and the action had plenty of reversals and counters. Like Michaels earlier, Ziggler was rarely the bigger man in a match so that gave this one something different from him. It's not a particularly memorable match overall but it was entertaining throughout and had a good, decisive finish.Rey Mysterio vs. CM Punk - This comes from Over the Limit 2010. If Punk lost he would be shaved bald but if Mysterio lost he would have to join the Straight Edge Society. The action here was great from start to finish, and had potential to be the best match from their rivalry. Unfortunately Punk got busted open which, during this era, unfortunately meant we had doctors getting in the way and halting the action. Outside of that though this was so good, with so many counters, reversals and near-falls. It had a good pace, outside of the issues with doctors, and built to a good, clean finish. The problems with this match weren't the performers' faults and they more than made up for them with the brilliant action that surrounded them.Rey Mysterio vs. CM Punk vs. Jack Swagger vs. The Big Show - This was a World Heavyweight Championship match from the Fatal 4-Way pay-per-view. It was a good, exciting match. Big Show was fairly dominant which caused his opponents to work together to take him out of the picture. That meant it played to his strengths of only being in action for short bursts. The others did a good job of keeping the match fun while Show was out, with a fast pace and attacks coming from all angles. Kane got involved later on in the match which wasn't necessary but it helped further story-lines and the finish was still decisive. Overall a very entertaining match.Rey Mysterio vs. Alberto Del Rio - This comes from a 2010 episode of Smackdown. It was a good, competitive match. Del Rio had previously broken Rey's arm and this was his comeback match so Rey was more aggressive than usual here, dominating the early portions of the match and attacking Del Rio's arm. Del Rio gets back into the fight and target's the previously injured arm. The psychology was good, there were plenty of reversals and some good near-falls. It gets a good amount of time and a strong and decisive finish.Rey Mysterio vs. Cody Rhodes - This final match was from Wrestlemania 27. It was a very good back and forth match. The action was strong and they told a good story with it. Cody Rhodes' protective face guard was central to the action as was Rey Mysterio's knee brace which originally injured Cody's face. There were some near-falls in the action and I really enjoyed the psychology with the face shield and knee brace, as they made them key parts of the match without focusing on them too much. The finish was also really good. It could have done with more time but it was very good while it lasted. This is a very good DVD set. It's a really strong group of matches, there are plenty that are missing but they're all included on the Biggest Little Man compilation. This DVD makes a good companion to that one, that one contains more important matches than this one but this one is no less enjoyable. All the major matches from Rey's WCW/ECW days have been released already so, while the action is good there, there's nothing particularly memorable early on. Once we reach the WWE the quality picks up and we get a load of great matches. Those matches make up the majority of the DVD too so you definitely get your money's worth.
