Good modem, but not the the technologically challenged
I bought this modem to replace my 4 year old Netgear that was beginning to give me some issues. Having sold TP-Link products at the store I work at, I was familiar with the brand, and comfortable enough to purchase (especially after discovering it did, in fact, work on Windstream DSL). The setup was *mostly* painless, but there were a few hiccups, and a less tech-savvy customer may run into problems beyond their ability to deal with. And most ISP's will not provide assistance with third party modems. Having said that, I was able to work around them, and am - obviously - online. What issues? Well, for starters, the IP address conflicted with my router. Both were set to 192.168.1.1. First, I tried setting my router IP to 192.168.1.254. Unfortunately, this didn't work (for reasons I'll cover shortly). At this point, I simply bypassed my router and went straight to the modem. Obviously, this worked to connect to the configuration screen. Now, I'm to the point of actually configuring my DSL connection. I already had my existing DSL settings from my old modem, so it was relatively simple to insert them into the new modem. I did run into a strange issue with it rejecting my settings the first time (it gave me an odd error about my VPI and VCI being repeated, despite setting them correctly), but that was fixed after I used the wizard to do the initial setup. I then went back in and setup all my configuration options. For some reason, it still didn't connect (but with no feedback as to why). After checking the log, it seems my ISP was rejecting my user/pass. I fiddled with a few settings, and retyped my password to be sure. At this point, it finally connected, indicating I may have just typed my password in wrong (in which case, that's my mistake). I do wish it had a little better feedback, as to the connection status, though. The whole "PVC x" stuff is new to me, so it took some adjusting to. I'm sure it's a nice feature to have - and I may even take advantage of it to test out some different settings - but it's definitely not for everyone, and should be under more advanced options, rather than as part of the main configuration page. Finally, to get back to the router. My router (a D-Link AC1300) defaults the IP range from 192.168.1.100 and up. As it turns out, so does this modem. I think that, even after changing the default IP of my router to 1.254, both it and my modem were using the same DHCP range, which just confused my poor computer. I set the IP of my modem to 192.168.0.1 and the DHCP range as 192.168.0.100, and no more conflict. These aren't major hurdles for someone technologically inclined (I'm a computer tech for a living, so it was relatively simple for me), but this is definitely not intended for plug-and-play end users. I was going to ding this one star for the configuration problems, but ultimately I couldn't justify doing so. Everything works great, and I'm getting my full 12Mb connection (tested at 12.23Mbps up on speedtest.net). The configuration problems weren't a result of a problem with the modem, just a problem with my setup, apart from that error message I got during my first attempt. Still, that wasn't enough for my to ding it one whole star.Mind you, this review is just after setting it up, so we'll see if this gives me the same kind of life span that my old Netgear did, or has any trouble in the long term.*EDIT*Huh, for some reason, Amazon goofed up my title. Hopefully, it stays corrected, now.

TP- LINK ADSL Modem Runs Forever
I ordered one of these TD-8816 units almost ten years ago. It worked long hours of daily use for almost a decade, and it still works. Due to its age, I ordered the exact same model for replacement. The old modem is now retired as a standby.

Doesn't work
Bought this to replace my old modem, hooked it up, lights came on, no Internet. Put my old modem back in place, everything works.

Cheap, does what it says on the box. No problems.
Easy to set up, runs fine without hickups, easy and fast to navigate interface, and firmware is the latest version upon unboxing. This is simply the best deal you can get on a DSL modem to use with a separate wifi access point (which I HIGHLY recommend). This is taking over the job from a D-LINK DSL-2640B which was overheating, dropping wifi connection (probably due to overheating), and throughput was horrid even for wireless G specs, and I could not be happier with my purchase.I grouped this with the TP-LINK TL-WR841N (also a 5 star review coming from me), and I just can't say enough in the value of this purchase.Seriously folks, if you have DSL, and you have a provider given/provided modem or modem/wifi combo, you can only do yourself good in purchasing these two items (or group with your choice of wireless AC/gigabit nic wifi access point if you have more expensive tastes). It's simple, speed is great, no drops, easy to set up and navigate, no frills, and best of all CHEAP.

Easy Setup and Works Well
I should preface this review with the statement that i have an extensive background in computing and networking, so my review might not mirror your results if you are not technically inclined. Though you should be fine with the device.I had the device up and running within a few minutes, i did not have to hunt around for places to put the relevant details required for setup. Then i switched it to pass-through mode and started controlling it from my Wifi router, so the router could control the DHCP. That was all easy and worked well. The device boots fast and gets it job done well for a very reasonable price. I would buy again if the device failed, though i imagine it will last a fairly long time.==============UPDATE: Aug 2013While my review was written some time in 2012, i actually had the device since 2011. It died in 2013.Happy about that? Not really.By another one? Yes certainly.Stuff breaks, that is life. TP Link equipment often lasts forever, but this unit did not. Their pricing is so fair i will just buy another one and not think about it too much.Changed from 5 star to 4 star.

Superb product .. meets req of ADSL Modem
Excellent ADSL Modem & Router. I was on the lookout for a plain ADSL 2+ Modem as my previous modem gave way and didn't need a WiFi enabled modem as my Linksys WRH 54G would be rendered useless. Tried the brick and mortar resellers, incl Reliance Digital, but to no avail. Then I came across this product on Amazon ! It works great, butter smooth, does not heat and has an DHCP bypass kind of function to disable the router on board. This makes it function like an ADSL modem and the DHCP cum routing and PPPoE functionality is handled by the Linksys Router connected to its only RJ-45 port. Satisfies my needs perfectly, except that it produces an extra 2230 V adapter, and Ethernet cable from the ADSL Modem to the Wifi Router. (as I had it before, nothing extra). TP-Link provides a splitter box, one long RJ-11 phone connection cable (incoming to splitter), one short RJ-11 cable (splitter to Modem), one RJ-45 cable for Modem to PC / Router, all in the box.All this for Rs 9XX/- and delivered at your doorstep by Amazon is amazing ! My setup incl one desktop connected on RJ-45 and one laptop and smartphones on 802.11 g/n.All in all, great product at a great price.

Un modem a 5 stelle
A me serviva un modem low-cost. E questo è il migliore nel rapporto qualità-prezzo trovato su amazon.Copre fino a 20Mb sicuri, almeno con Telecom. Installazione semplice, configurabile in 5 minuti.Ha anche ottime funzioni da router, provate e poi rimosse perché uso un router sempre tp-link collegato e va alla grande !!!

Good Modem
I have been using the modem with my Airtel broadband for a little over 3months and till date no issues . It works perfectly with my Linksys wireless router. The only issue is that its a tad bit slow to connect but once connected the speed is quite good. Worth buying it.
