Wise, inexpensive way to see how your household can save energy
To reduce expenses and to help protect the environment, in early 2021 our household started taking a number of measures to cut our energy consumption. Those measures have proven successful: total 2021 electricity consumption in our single-family, detached home in the US SE was about 8,000 kWh (3,200 of which was for HVAC), compared to about 11,000 kWh annual average in previous years. [UPDATE on 1/1/23: our total electricity consumption in 2022 dropped even further to just 5,500 kWh (1,600 of which was for HVAC) for the year. We have HALVED our electricity consumption. Huge savings. This electricity usage monitor continues to operate beautifully. We lend it to friends and family so that they can do their own diagnostics at their homes and see where they can save.] Looking back, we can say that purchasing the Kuman Electricity Usage Monitor Plug has been one of our wisest and most useful moves, and a very inexpensive one at that. The Usage Monitor Plug helped us to gain really eye-opening – and often surprising – insights into our electricity usage, allowing us to identify specific steps we could take to reduce consumption. Most importantly, we learned that “phantom power,” or the energy consumed by things when they are plugged in but not being used, accounted for a lot of our waste. Here are just a few examples: We discovered that our microwave used 64 kWh annually … in standby mode. We estimate that our actual annual use of the microwave takes less than 60 kWh. We now unplug it when we’re not using it. Another big consumer is our modem/router, coming in at 88 kWh/year. We now unplug it when the last person calls it a night. For people with set schedules, a timer switch would also work. Among the other major users of phantom energy are our TV w/ accessories (138 kWh/year when not being used but left plugged in) and our CD player (60 kWh/year in standby). One final example: Our rather old dishwasher is a real glutton, coming in at nearly 700 kWh/year. Newer, more energy-efficient models use less that 200 kWh/year. The next time our dishwasher breaks down, we will replace it rather than repair it. Good unit to check amp and volt draw. This a 15amp max checking unit so no using any where above 15amps. If screen reads 14.5amps, you are close to its limit. Easy to use. Easy screen to see. I have two. One on stage right. One stage left. You can plug into a 20 volt circuit to check but still keeping under the 14.5amp-15amp limit. Probably be buying a third unit. I helps to know that you will not be tripping a provided circuit while on a job. This unit is more of a plug in and leave for 30 minutes check which is excellent. Thanks for a great product.

Gets The Job Done But....
Order one with a backlight!! I found myself having to grab a cell or flash light to see during overcast days. The function button cycles through all the various read outs. I realize now that I would prefer the dedicated buttons of the kill a watt. One cool feature is that it shows high and low watt usage so you can see how little or how much it spiked too. Super useful. But keep in mind that if you want to test multiple devices, which you probably will, you will have to reset it after each use to get accurate high and low readings. It seems pretty accurate when paired with a usb power meter, those measurements were pretty close on the volts and amps. Also note that the amp rating is interesting to me because I expected it to read 0.100 for 1 amp but it reads 0.010 for one amp. Im no expert though but its what I noticed. Overall, I am happy with the device and got some good readings from it. I ordered a 3 foot extension cord to use with this just to give me some more room compared to my 1 foot extension cable. The angels of the screen are ok but straight on is best which is where having that extension cord is valuable. You could even use a longer one but I dont think I will need anything longer than that and if I do I already have a few laying around the house.

A less costly clone of a Kill-A-Watt meter
This sort of meter is handy to discover how much electricity a single device (or multiple devices connected to a power strip) use under various usage conditions. This info can be handy to help optimize total power usage around the house (for example, to find ways to lower your electric bill). Many years ago, when I first started doing this analysis, about the only device on the market to do this was the classic Kill-A-Watt meter. However, over the years I've lost the Kill-A-Watt meters I've bought, so when I recently wanted to again do this analysis I looked into getting another Kill-A-Watt. But when I looked at prices of new Kill-A-Watt meters on Amazon, I found that the price has actually gone up over the years (vs lowering over time). However, this device appears to do the same function for about 1/3 of the price of a new Kill-A-Watt. So I decided to get it and see if it would do the job, and thankfully this device seems to be a decent "clone" of my old Kill-A-Watt for a fraction of the cost. Now this device isn't an exact duplicate of a Kill-A-Watt, as it does come with a different size, shape, and controls vs the Kill-A-Watt. But functionally this device performs the same function. And since this device is functionally the same, for a fraction of the cost, that's "good enough" for me. If any of you are curious, the main thing I'm currently using this meter with is my new window air conditioner (important, given the high temps that are currently hitting my part of the country). With this meter attached (to the AC cord) I get a constant readout of how much power that AC unit is currently using. This not only tells me how much the AC is adding to my electric bill, but also what state the AC unit is in. For example, if the power usage is around 70 watts, it means that the AC fan is running but the AC compressor isn't currently on. Conversely a usage in the 380-450 watt range means the AC is fully cooling with both fan and compressor active. And, of course, with the AC off the power usage goes to 0 (which is also reflected by this meter).

Useful tool for reading and monitoring electricity usage
This is a version of the popular Kill-a-W*** monitor on the market for several years. It even has a "KW" model number. The meter allows you to see how many watts and amps specific appliances are drawing, as well as to see how much those items are costing you in electricity charges. It plugs into a 120v outlet to measure line voltage and amperage, then you plug specific appliances into the front of the meter to measure them. I plan to use this meter on my standby generator to see which appliances I can actually run, and to avoid overloads. In the meantime, I've included photos of the meter displaying line voltage and watts being used by a small LED table lamp, as examples. Entering the power company charges is a bit fiddly, but if that's important to you, it's do-able. Note that while this meter has a nice big and clear LCD display, it's not backlit, so in low light situations you will likely need a flashlight to read it. Alternatively, it has an internal battery to keep readings in memory, so you can read them later. I like having a way to monitor power usage, and this meter allows you to do it at an economical price.

Easy to use, shows surge watts!
Just got it today, took just a couple minutes to look it over and figure it out from the small two-page manual, which can also be viewed form the Amazon page. I wanted to figure out the surge watts--the highest power required by each of my devices-- and this unit reports both Lo and Hi watts used (just press the FUNCTION button until it displays what I'm looking for). When I unplug the device, it still retains the captured data so I can write them what I need later. I wish the display was brighter, but hey: for about half the price of the competition, AND to report the Hi watts (surge watts), this is awesome! But to be honest, I've used it only for a couple hours so far. Tonight, I'll use it to tell me the wattage of my fridge, which I need to know as we're thinking about emergency power backup generators. I found it's useful to a 12-gauge extension cord (mine is just 2-ft long) which I first plug into my electrical outlet. Next, I plug the Kuman device into the extension cord, and then the device I'm testing plugs into the Kuman device. Then, I press the reset button (with a pen or paper clip) to reset/zero the counters. When I tested my computer, I have several devices (scanner, external monitor, camera, other devices being recharged, etc.) plugged into my Rosonway 3.0 USB hub, and all power cords are plugged into the same extension surge protector. So to measure the wattage my devices use, I just unplug the surge protector from the wall and insert this Kuman device between the surge protector and the electrical outlet. Simple. Highly recommended, would absolutely buy again!

For me this was a non-starter. The screen is not readable from the side and the backlight turns off after a few seconds.

Has saved me many times more than the cost of it. And does that over and over.
A great way to learn what you are really spending to keep all your electrical items always on standby mode. I found out that leaving my microwave plugged in when I wasn't using it actually used more electricity than it did using cooking. food each year. Now I save the cost of all that power just to be able to see what time it is. I've got a watch, a phone and a battery operated wall clock that lets me know the time. My electric bill is much less now that I've made a habit of checking to see how much all my instant on things were wasting. Took a while to check everything but was well worth it.

works so far, without manual, can still use it like i wanted to. The only thing i wish i could do was add time and time of use rates. And resetting doesn't reset the rates, just the electrical usage data. What works so far, is i can see how much electricity i use on a device. The problem is, i also have to adjust it based on time, due to my area adjusts costs based on the time of day. If this could be included, and rates aren't just wiped out everytime you press reset, as rates done change, it would save a lot of time. Also, time of use would help really check the cost of everything. I do get that some people do not want this feature. But having it as an option would be great, and those who dont need can just turn it off.
