Great way to add softener at the right time during wash cycle!

It's a simple device that works flawlessly due to physics and careful material choice and design. There's no better way to use liquid fabric softener in a top-loading washing machine that doesn't have a built-in fabric-softener dispenser. It's probably a better answer than a lot of the built-in dispensers, too.If you like to use fabric softener, or you have clothes that require it (like Thorlo socks), and you have a top-loading washing machine, you should grab a Downy Ball. It seems like they're discontinued, for some insane reason, so grab one while you can! They do eventually wear out...

Great item. Works well in a washing machine that does not have its own softener dispenser. Have been using for three months with no issues.

I loved the idea of this, but I had a problem. This was recommended in the information of my new Maytag HE washer. The washer does not have a fabric softener dispenser, rather it has a fabric softener on/off knob. Since I do not use Downey or any other store type liquid, I filled it to the line with vinegar. I have used vinegar for years and always waited the 20 minutes (exactly) until the rinse cycle started to easily lift the lid and pour it in. My former washer was not HE. It filled each load with the same amount of water so I always knew when the rinse cycle was about to begin. NOW FOR THE PROBLEM: MY HE washer fills with water according to the amount of clothes. It takes more time to fill with a larger load and then washes at a different rate than another load. I never knew when the rinse cycle was starting, so I thought this Downey Ball would be a great idea. Apparently the machine and Downey Ball do not like vinegar. I don't know how the plug in the top of the ball opens up at the right time, but after trying it several times, the ball only emptied once, and that was half way. I'm sure this works great with regular softener, but my experience with the vinegar was not satisfactory. Not the fault of the ball, of course. Used with softener as you are supposed to, says my neighbor who I gave the ball to, it works very well.

Got this today. Opened the box, the float and the pull ring and the small pole that holds the pull ring was all pulled apart and laying inside of the ball. That was not easy to get all of that out. Once I did, each time I pulled the ring out, the ring would pop off of it, the rest fall into the ball, and well, nothing works right. I got it together, washed a load, and it never did open. Big disappointment that whoever put this together sure screwed it up. I had to use small pliers to get everything out of the ball and put it all back together, and you can not pull on the ring without it falling completely apart again.NO comment from the seller, go figure! Not worth sending it back, but I should! Annoying buying something that is already broken when you recieve it!

It worked to dispense the fabric softener but it’s way too noisy. Dryer sheets works just as well.
