Panther Project Vol 2: Engine and Turret (The Panther Project)

Must-have for scale modellers!
With volume 1, these books are the ultimate source for anyone modelling a Panther with internal detail. The superb restoration of a Panther by Kevin Wheatcroft's organisation is detailed in the best photo's I've seen. There are details of engine/transmission/torsion bars etc. The book shows work so far, at the time of it's publication. Not comprehensive as there is obviously much left to do on the Panther, but the photo's in these volumes are pure gold for AFV model-makers!

Excelent Reference book.
I found this book really use useful, showing clear, detailed photos of the parts that are usually a tiny bit, tucked away in a grainy photo. I shall be asking Santa for the 1st Volume next Christmas.

A continuation of excellence.
This volume continues the tradition of showing and telling you what you need to know and not meandering into whimsical whatif or personal theories. Practical, informative and extremely good value for money. Looking forward to more from this highly talented and professional team. Thanks folks, done good.

Magnificent in depth look at the German iconic Panther
This is the second in The Research Squad’s detailed step by step coverage of the restoration of the Wheatcroft Collection’s Panther Ausf A concentrating on the engine and turret. The 208 page book starts with the history of the Panzerkampfwagen V Panther Fgst.Nr. 158134 that rolled off the Demag production line in November 1943. This builds on the scant information available when volume 1 was first published and includes pictures of the disabled Panther on the Chemin du Vieux-Moulin in the Le Val de Breuil area of Briouze. After this brief introduction the book documents the state of the tank when it first arrived at the Wheatcroft Collection. The Panther is in a poor state generally and little more than a rusting hulk. Restoration work started in 2007 and the bulk of the book chronicles the work to restore, rebuild or manufacture new parts to fully renovate the tank. Each phase is chronicled year by year up to 2018.Every page has colour photographs showing every aspect of the work in incredible detail. There are some general walk around pictures but the vast majority show close up details of the interior concentrating on the Maybach HL 230 P30 engine and components and the turret interior as well as the fighting compartment.Clearly the photographer had unrestricted access as the subject is covered at every angle. The book includes a description of the Zimmerit paste that was used for the restoration and shows how the restored finish closely matches the small patch of original Zimmerit. The final part of the book is technical illustrations showing cut away sections of the major components.Anyone wishing to build a large scale model of the Panther that shows interior detail needs look no further than this series of books. This impressive volume offers the modeller and historian alike an unprecedented overview of the Panther. The books historical detail, excellent large-format images and technical illustrations are all excellent and will appeal to many.

Remarkable reference source
Panther Project (Volumes I & II) document the progress, and provide a stunning photo record of a "Cost is not an issue" restoration project, with the end goal being a fully functional vehicle that is authentically equipped in "as issued" condition. The Volumes are well-organized, the photo quality is superb, and specific details are unobtrusively noted and frequently cross-referenced with supporting images. There are more than a few pre- and early restoration images provided as taken before the Panther Project documentation commenced, brief discussions in both volumes of the on-going effort to establish historical provenance for the specific vehicle, and a wealth of item-specific information in the photo captions.I would note that this IS NOT a "Get to know Panther" type of reference: It isn't a technical manual or a study of the design evolution. It isn't an operational / combat history overview. It isn't a conversational walk around the vehicle for those that aren't already well acquainted with the Pz.Kpfw V
