Product Description A live TV production of the Tony®-winning play Capturing all the intimacy and electricity of theatre, this live TV production of Mister Roberts rekindles the rousing warmth of the production that won five Tony Awards® on Broadway. The time is 1945. The setting, a navy cargo ship far from battles raging in the Pacific. Longing to see real action, Lt. Doug Roberts (Robert Hays, Airplane!) wages a war of wills against Capt. Morton (two-time Oscar®-nominee Charles Durning), a petty tyrant whom the rambunctious crew considers "approximately God." Allied with Ensign Pulver (Kevin Bacon) and Doc (Howard Hesseman, WKRP in Cincinnati), Roberts finds himself torn between his ambition to serve his country and his duty to serve his men. By turns hilarious and heartbreaking, this production relies on the original Broadway script with supervision by Joshua Logan, who cowrote and directed the stage play. Filmed before a studio audience, it gracefully combines the magic of a theatre performance and the daring of a live broadcast. DVD SPECIAL FEATURES INCLUDE a background essay "Mister Roberts on Stage and Screen" and cast filmographies. Review A fine work that appreciates in value. -- Fulvue Drive-inDurning, of course, is an acting god. -- San Francisco ChronicleWatching this production is probably as good as seeing it live on stage, if not better. --Blogcritics Magazine

Not the actual broadcast
First of all, ya'll are idiots that thought this was the Henry Fonda movie. Do you seriously not read the description of things!? Now that I got that out of the way...This is not the version that was actually broadcast on NBC. My best guess is that this is a dress rehearsal that they filmed. They are many minor differences that make this apparent, such as camera angles and such. Also one other reviewer said it seemed like the actors were just not that into their performances (I think they saved it for the actual broadcast). In the scene where Kevin Bacon knocks on the Captain's door, in the original his voiced cracked (unintentionally probably as he was trying to be heard over the audience's applause) which helped to highlight how young his character is. That was missing in this version. One of the things that makes it very annoying to watch this version is the audience seemed to not have any idea when they should laugh or applaud. I guess the applause sign was not used when they recorded this, or else they added a laugh and applause track for the live version.I do love this cast and the original live version. I would have given it 5 stars if this was THAT one.Don't get me wrong, this is way closer to the original play than the movie was.

MISTAKE. but PROBABLY GOOD
I didn't realize that it was a play and not the original movie. They were good actors. but I'm just not into plays. I like movies.

It is a play not a movie
Shipping was no problem it arrived in a reasonable amount of time. The only problem was that it was a play and not a movie. I thought I read in the description that it was based on the play but was a video of that actual play.

Great tribute to the old Playhouse 90 days of live ...
Great tribute to the old Playhouse 90 days of live television. A bit stiff on the production...I would have liked to see more grit and rust everywhere. Too neat and clean. And a slight but of rolling on the seas---camera movement would have accomplished that. But the acting was terrific! Good job!

Superb peformance; high quality production
Kevin Bacon as Ens. Pulver steals the show in this wonderful performance of the play, which was based on a novel. If you are a fan of the 1955 film (which is also very good and follows the play's script pretty closely), I think you'll enjoy this version a lot.

Jan's review of Mr. Roberts
I wasn't 100% please with the version of Mr. Roberts I down loaded. I was looking for the one with Henry Fonda. It's the best movie I have ever seen.

BE ADVISED--This is the 1984 recorded-live made-for-TV version.
All the bad reviews are based on the purchaser not being aware of this fact. This is easily the best performance Howard Hesseman ever gave, and possibly Kevin Bacon's best.
