Small incoming potential meteorites are slowed down by Earth’s atmosphere and typically make shallow indentations in the ground known as impact pits. Larger meteorites occasionally form craters, while the most massive space rocks — building-sized or larger — produce gigantic impact features called astroblemes, or “star wounds.” The largest star wounds on Earth are millions of years old and some are more than one hundred miles across, making them bigger than some countries! These giant meteorite impacts generated enormous heat and pressure that melted Earth rock into new and unique materials known as impactites. Moldavites, green impact glasses, have been admired by artists and sculptors for centuries. The massive meteorites that forged impactites have long since weathered away — rusting and disintegrating over time — but the ghostly footprints of those terrifying events remain, as impactites. Moldavites are stunning rich green impact glasses created by the heat and pressure of an ancient meteorite impact. They are found in a very few areas within Bohemia and Moravia in the Czech Republic, and the Republic of Moldova, which gives these captivating impactites their name. Some experts believe that moldavites are associated with the Nordlinger Ries impact crater event. If that is correct, it would make them approximately 15 million years old. Your 4oz gel candle contains a ~1 gram Moldavite.
