Had the privilege of meeting Mr. Fiske recently and he told us about his recent book. I ordered it for my husband, but have read it myself and it is terrific-a great blend of professional and personal stories by a remarkable man. A great read.

Just as it's author, very interesting, honorable and intelligent. Of special interest to lawyers and those interested in the life and the issues of any age;and of special value to young lawyers. Excellent in large measure because, although sometimes necessarily discreet, it is true.

A Singularly Great Attorney
This is a wonderful book that tells the life and legal career of a great lawyer. I had the privilege of working in his office when he was U.S. Attorney in the SDNY. While I never worked directly with him I did watch him argue in court. His demeanor, intelligent articulation, and poise before the Court always stayed with me. In the more than 35 years since then I have held the mental image of this as the attorney I should aspire to be---and the family man I hope I have been. At yearly reunions when I see him now he is as personable and friendly as if I had worked directly with him on a case. The time in that Office was all too short, and as Bob indicates in his book, public service is the apogee of a legal career. I have watched all the important events he describes in the book in admiration of the integrity and ability of this man---many when I was in D.C. All aspiring attorneys should read this book.

Memoirs that Inform the past and inspire the future
At one point Bob Fiske quotes a wise lawyer who said, "Don't hoist the meat so high the dog won't jump." His remarkable memoir gives details case after case in which the lawyers have to find that balance. Here is a splendid book for anyone interested in how the law should be used to promote a civil society. One begins with the lawyers, who treat each other with civility and respect despite adversarial roles and deep disagreements. We in America are so fortunate to have the rule of law as a fundamental part of our culture, and to have lawyers such as those Bob Fiske describes in his book who give their professional lives to making it work. When people cannot resolve inevitable conflicts by agreement, good lawyers and courts are the last step. This book tells you how and why he took the steps he did, giving guidance for many to follow.John Adams Fiske, youngest brother

A Worthy Read
I enjoyed reading this tremendously. Many of the cases he writes about, especially those early in his career, reminded me of news coverage I had read or seen about them, some, decades ago. Of course, these things often fade from the news, or from my attention, before they are resolved. It was interesting to what became of these, and what went on behind the scenes.I am not an attorney, so perhaps have no standing to judge, but, it would seem that Mr. Fiske is truly, "A lawyer's lawyer," exemplifying all the professionalism, integrity, judgement, and skill that one would hope for in a member of his profession. It is gratifying to learn that that still exists, and that Mr. Fiske has been dedicated to mentoring young lawyers, and encouraging these values.
