Q: In what world were these cables ever $99.99?

Q: On the 40 ft cable, there is a component in the middle. What does it do? Is it just connecting two shorter cables?

From my understanding it is supposed to aid with processing of your data, streaming etc due to the length of the cord (I guess you could say a signal booster). I will be honest I used it at the church I am a member of it lasted about a month, we also had issues with livestreaming when using this cable. Purchased a 50 ft cable without the booster and have not had any problems with it whatsoever, save your money and leave this cable alone, it is not worth it.

Q: Would the 50' cable cause noticeable input lag when using for gaming? Thanks!

There will be some measurable lag. But, will it be noticeable? Hard to say in general terms. It will depend on the processes of your machine and our sensitivity to lag. But, given the speed of electrical data in wire (less than the speed of light), the actual delay in the cable only will be quite short.
