What types of items do you test for pets?

We test 300 items which include most proteins, fruits, vegetables, grasses, trees, preservatives, grains, etc. We took most of the ingredients found in dog and cat foods and applied what we could to our list.

What is the difference between “allergy” and “intolerance”?

Some of the symptoms of allergies and intolerances are the same or similar, but the differences between the two are very important.

5Strands® Affordable Testing only tests for “intolerances”, which represent the majority of reactions. An intolerance is a response that does not take place in the body’s immune system and may appear several hours or days after ingestion or exposure. A true allergy is an immune system response. It is caused by the body mistaking a food or item as a harmful substance and releasing antibodies to fight it. The adverse reaction is usually rapid and can be life-threatening, even at microscopic levels. Some of the most common known food allergens are peanuts, tree nuts and seafood. 5Strands® Affordable Testing does NOT test for this type of reaction IgE allergies, which represents only 2% of all allergic/intolerance reactions.
