You don’t. It’s part of the adjustable head mechanism and safety features. If you don’t want to wear it simply tuck it between the outer and inner head piece.

Could this be adjusted to fit a 6 year old?

Yes. The ratchet strap ratchets down extremely small. The chin strap also adjusts down quite well. The bigger question though is why would you have a 6yo around while cutting down trees??

This hard hat is so great. Getting to small spaces and leaning over is no problem with the chin strap keeping it in place. Also your able to wear ear protection and eye protection easily with it
