can this drive be used simply as a backup or storage drive (using both slots - e.g. 2 x 6tb = 12tb storage) ?

Yes. I currently use it with 1 x 3Tb and 1 x 4Tb drive for daily backups.

is it backwards compatible with USB"?

yes you can download and upload on it.

The advert says 'The target disk must be larger than the source disk' - for disk-to-disk cloning. Is that true or can you use disks of equal size?

The symbol clearly shows "equal to or greater than". You cannot physically clone a larger disk to a smaller disk. But you can to one of the same size or greater size.

If you clone the OS does it create like for like so the new disk is bootable? Migrating from hdd to ssd.

Yes you can convert a hdd to a ssd as long as they are both have the same connector the new drive will be an exact copy of the original and bootable you will need to resize it once in your computer as the computer will see the drive size as it was and the spare unused portion of the drive will need to be mounted easily done with the drive utilitie app on the Mac
