I havent sewn since school and even then only hand sewing - bought myself a machine, the book helped me get to grips with it and for my first sewing machine project I made four basic cushions covers. The write up's are very easy to follow, the diagrams and photo's are great for someone who needs to see what they're being told to do! I enjoy looking through the book and also enjoy using it as a very useful reference tool. I would recommend it to anyone who needs sewing machine guidance with the intention of creating great things, pictures along the way and is hoping to move on to bigger and better things. it's money well spent

I ordered this second hand book not sure of the condition it would be in. It arrived earlier than expected and it is in excellent condition. In fact it looks brand new. I have been sewing for about 10 years now but I am finding I am refereeing to this book regularly to get extra information on different techniques. New Complete Guide to Sewing: Step-By-Step Techniques for Making Clothes and Home Accessories (Reader's Digest) [Hardcover]I bought this for my Mum as she's recently rekindled her love of sewing and is getting into dressmaking big time. She insisted on this edition as it's better than the others. Apparently it has important techniques included that are not featured in other editions. She has stressed that paying the extra is well worth it.This does now seem to be her bible!I am so impressed with the things she has made recently, including an evening gown that I hope to wear soon at a black tie event.It's a very good comprehensive book that will no doubt be thumbed regularly for the rest of her life.

Technically I haven't started using this in a normal way, but my Pfaff has a funny problem with the power connection to the machine. Since I bought this book my machine never fritzes on me, because it is the perfect weight and size to rest on the cord so that the cable sits right. My level of sewing frustration has therefore sunk 500% thanks to this book preventing my machine from stopping working every 3 minutes. I LOVE this book...plus the instructions inside are great!

This book is really your go-to guide of all things sewing. Although it was very complicated as a beginner, as you progress and learn, this book is invaluable to use a reference. Lots of info and well worth the money. If you are just starting out, I would suggest getting a book tailored for beginners to get you started and have this in your library as you progress.

A real "MUST" for all who enjoy Needlecraft.Newcomers and Professionals alike.All procedures are explained in depth and in layman's terms both with text and illustrations.Excellent layout.I have found that all "FAQS" are answered.I can not fault the book-then I don't expect to -it is published by "Readers Digest"Over the years if I have needed a book on a certain subject I have researched for one in the"Readers Digest"range.By the way I am not getting commision from the publisher!!!!!!!!

A classic that has aged gracefully. Truly encyclopedic - if it's not in here, you probably don't need to know it!Of course many of the garment patterns have dated, but as a technical reference it has never been bettered.If you can pick it up at a decent price, it deserves a place on every sewer's bookshelf.

This book has so many tips in it. I borrowed it from the library and decided there was so much in it I should just get my own copy. I'm sure I'll be referring to it all the time, even though I won't bother with the pattern projects.

Great book to have on hand to help remember techniques not used often. Good for learning too.

Tons of pictures and illustrations helping with the text. You can be a beginner o advanced and it has advice for all the levels.

This is one of the best sewing guides available. If you are new to sewing or if you don't have a basic sewing guide, this is probably one of the best investments you can make towards helping you learn or review a technique before you perform it on your fashion fabric.One of my favorite features is the fabric width conversion chart, which is really handy if you know how much fabric you will need for a certain width and find a fabric you like in a different width. There is a fairly comprehensive fabric guide, including suggestions on what kinds of projects are appropriate for each type of fabric. The section on patterns is especially nice, with tips for how to alter placement of darts and how to do most any kind of pattern alteration. Altering patterns is probably one of the most daunting tasks for a beginning sewer and this book has excellent instructions on how to achieve those alterations. There is also a fairly nice section for making adjustments based on how the garment muslin fits, i.e. are there pulls or wrinkles in different locations - how those wrinkles are telling you which part of the pattern needs to be adjusted, and how to make the adjustment. Of course, there is also a section on how to measure yourself.The instructions for each technique are nicely illustrated and there seems to be an nice balance between how much of the instruction is contained in illustrations as opposed to "words". Each chapter includes a sample project, including a photograph of the garment, identification of the pattern (Simplicity patterns), cutting layout and sewing instructions.

i used to have the previous version of this book, and i liked it better, pictures were bigger. sadly my dog went number 1 on it so i had to throw it away. i think 25 euros is an honest price for such a big volume. great as a reference book or as a beginner sewing course.
