Developed by the University of Cambridge School Classics Project, this bestselling Latin program provides an enjoyable and carefully paced introduction to the Latin language, complemented by background information on Roman culture and civilization. The story begins in the town of Pompeii shortly before the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79 and follows the fortunes of the household of Lucius Caecilius Iucundus. Further titles in the Course take the reader to the Roman provinces of Britain and Egypt, and to imperial Rome itself. Review: Solid, step=by-step with illustrations and a story-line intro to Latin - This is a great second text for me, as a self-learning adult. My other resource has been Lingua Latina, which has the accompanying audio which is GREAT. The pros of this are: -explanations in English of the grammar -A slower, more gradual introduction of grammar points -each chapter has a section on historical/ cultural information which I find is EXTREMELY helpful -it is very user friendly Cons: -no audio, that is, they made audio, it's hard to find and extremely expensive Note: I did manage to procure the CDs for Unit 1 and Unit 2. Paid a lot. They were produced with a whole repertoire of actors , so you get many voices, not just one, plus accompanying sound effects. However, they make no effort to differentiate the long vowels from the short, and not infrequently get the stress on the wrong syllable. Review: Delightful Hard-Cover Cambridge Latin Course (CLC) - I'm an amateur polyglot in Sydney. Long story cut short, I ended up buying all the N American & "England" version CLC text-books. Here are some info I love to share with desertcart patrons: 1. N American version CLC offers 4 student books in total. The ones that I bought are hard cover 5th edition. It is just delightful to flip thru the books and all the illustrations/manga are in colours! 2. "England" version CLC offers 5 student books in total. The current stocks available in their website (i.e. University of Cambridge online store) are 4th edition, only in soft cover. Those illustrations are in mono colour. To compare these 2 versions, there are minor differences, text wise, in sample sentences of each chapter. But it differs a lot in their culture & civilisation sections respectively. Most of the CD recordings available on desertcart for N American CLC are thou 4th edition, whereas on Cambridge website the CDs (& the books) are all 4th edition. Nonetheless, the accent adopted in the recordings is quite adherent to reconstructed classical way. In addition, "England" version provides abundant amount of audio tracks; 2 CDs come along with each text book. In short, I have fallen in love with this CLC series. It comes with large amount of dialogues and texts (fully supported by audio), grammatical notes, and cultural info. A must-have for Latin lovers :-)

Perfect for the Latin novice
I had a lot of fun with this book. I'm pretty new to Latin (about 4 months of self-study) and this was the perfect way for me to improve my latin Grammer and reading skills. Great for vocabulary, basic grammar (including the first 3 noun declensions, the 4 verb conjugations, present, imperfect, and perfect tense. All complemented with context in English between stories. The stories start a little basic, but as your vocabulary expands and your understanding of grammar increases the stories get much more interesting. By the end I was captivated while reading in Latin! Definitely a great book for the Latin novice.
