Hart Schaffner Marx Men's Burnett Trench Coat

I have been looking for a trench / rain coat to replace a similar coat that I have had (and loved) for 15 years. I am 6 ft, 173 pounds and a perfect 42L in a suit, waist is 36 inches, shirt is a 34/35 length in the arms, so I bought a 42L HSM coat, the fit is perfect. I would buy exactly my suit size based on my experience. I can wear it over a suit (since it is a fuller cut) or without a suit coat. The length is below the knee which I like because it will protect your pants from the rain. Similarly, the sleeve length is slightly over the wrist and will definitely protect the arm of the suit coat. The lining zips out, (and the wool collar) making this a coat I can use all year round. The color of the coat is deep black with the outer material being a cotton blend, making it feel and look very rich (not a shiny like a 100% polyester). The styling is unique (something Bogart would wear) and will definitely make you stand out in a crowd. My wife loved the look of the coat...a very good sign. The quality of the coat is excellent and is everything I expect from HSM. The best part is that the price was discounted to $70 which was crazy good. When I unboxed the coat I noticed it had a price tag on the sleeve that you would see in a retail store of $395...so thank you, I am a very happy consumer. I expect to get another 15 years out of this coat!

This coat is top of the line. I read a few dozen reviews before buying this coat and found them a bit confusing. Some suggested that you buy a size larger if you plan on wearing it over a suit. Other reviews stated that they run so large that you should buy the next size down. This is what I found.I am 6ft, 233 lbs. I wear an XL shirt, size 40 pants, and a 46R suit. I purchased the 46R Trench Coat. This coat fits well over my suitcoat. Not to big, and not to small. I don't wear a suit very often. I usually wear business casual. Dress slacks, or jeans with a t shirt and cotton canvas button collar shirt.Without the suitcoat, the trench coat fits very well. Plenty of room but not baggy. Yes, the coat will be a bit more roomy, but that is what the waist belt is for. Just wrap the belt around and tie a loose knot, or leave coat unbuttoned for a relaxed casual look.The quality is amazing. If this coat had cost a couple hundred dollars more, it would be worth it. The weight of the fabric and the construction remind me of the grey trench coat the Marine Corps used to issue. All in all, it is a great looking high quality trench coat that will last many years and look just as great on Wall St, as it would on 10 Downing St in London. I highly recommend it.

Remarkably similar to the Lauren by Ralph Lauren "Edmond" trench coat (same RN number, both made in Vietnam) with a higher quality lining and a few other upgraded touches. Also, available in my favorite color (tan) whereas the Lauren I have only seen in black or taupe. Full disclosure: this replaces my Lauren "Edmond" which, due to my weight loss, is way too big.This is a classic trench coat. With the lining in, it is warm enough for sub-freezing temperatures. The coat is a bit oversized - which is right when worn over a suit or sportcoat. May be a bit big if worn without the lining and without a suit jacket or sportcoat underneath.Quality is first rate. And, the price was right.

Because of the generous "free returns" option I bought this for my hubby (who is normally a 42 Short) in a 42 short and a 40 short, just to be sure of the fit. The 42 Short fit PERFECTLY both with and without the zip-out liner and with and without a sports coat/suit jacket underneath without looking bulky or sloppy. The sleeves hit just slightly over the wrist and the overall length is just past the knee. This is an absolutely BEAUTIFUL trench coat. It has an excellent feel, sheen (without being too shiny) and fit at an extremely competitive price. OUTSTANDING!!

I purchased this after being unable to justify spending $1900 on a Burberry/Aquascutum trench coat, even though I do walk to work in fickle New England weather each day in a suit. I am 6' tall with an athletic build, and usually wear a 42R jacket. Considering other customer reviews posted here, I ordered a size 40R – and it was still a bit too big. Thankfully exchanges were free, so I swapped it for a 38R (considerably smaller than my usual size!) and it fits me perfectly over a suit. Also, the length on the model in the picture appears to be Short; regular length hits just at the bottom of my kneecaps, which is fine with me, but might be a bit too long for some.The coat is a bit on the heavy side, and the belt buckle is made of rather cheap plastic – shouldn't be a problem to replace with a sturdier one if you prefer, though. Otherwise, it's an awesome coat, especially considering the price - water resistance is solid, and the zip-out lining & detachable collar warmer keeps me very warm in chilly New England winds.

Great fit and great looking. I like the Loden color (I'd call it Taupe). And it has lots of handy pockets including one for sunglasses - left front inside. Classic WW-1 double-breasted trench coat with all the classic details - shoulder epaulets, waist belt, adjustable cuff straps.Got it in the mail today and wore it right away because of really cold weather - 3 compliments within an hour! Fits great over my sport coat as advertised. I'd recommend this coat to anyone!

5'-8", 210 lbs, with a bit extra around the middle. Wear a 44R jacket, but reading others feedback on sizing, ordered 42R which is perfectly tailored in girth and arm length with enough room for jacket underneath. Realizing this coat will look bulky if and when I can shed 30 lbs. Overall length is about 3" below my knee. Ordered it in logen, which most would call gray, but a nice, formal color, and looks awesome topped with a fedora.Amazon pricing is all over the place depending on sizes, so just lucked out that my size was under $100.The bad- Although coat arrived on a heavy hanger in a plastic bag, and folded neatly in box, it will still need to have wrinkles pressed out, and as someone else stated, the lapels may not lay exactly flat. Overall, it is almost everything one could expect in a traditional trench coat.

Bought as a gift and we were delighted with the quality and fit, could not find anything as good as this for the price in the shops.

I was using a StormTech Winter Coat that I purchased 14 years ago. It still fits and I still use it for casual wear only as it is looking a little worse for wear. Also, I am attending a gala banquet for Chris Hadfield, the astronaut. So I needed to look my best. I received this trench coat two days sooner than expected, which was great. I am 6"2" and 245 lbs and ordered a 52 Regular. It fits perfectly and looks amazing. To my astonishment, the manufacturer's price tag was still attached with its suggested retail price of $395.00 (US) or $500 (CDN). I purchased it from Amazon for $242.99 (CDN), a saving of $257.01 or 51.5% off!! The coat is amazing with its deep pockets, zip-out liner, detachable collar and superb stitching. The liner appears to be the same material that you would find in navy pea coats. It extends out over the collar, as you see in the picture, for winter wear. With this zip-out liner and detachable collar, this trench coat is suitable for both winter and summer wear. The waist belt length is very generous, even for someone with my girth (44"). The colour, Loden, is a neutral gray on the dark side with a tinge of khaki, perfect for this type of tench coat. Put on a brown crush-able wool-felt wide-brimmed fedora, which I have, and you will feel like Sam Spade, Indiana Jones or Frank Sinatra. Looking forward to wearing this coat all year around. I normally wear size 42 jackets and Suits. This was too large and I had to return. A 38R would properly even over a jacket for me. I finally ended up buying a London Fog size 38R and filled very well over a suit also. I am 5ft 10" and 180 lbs.38R in this brand was too expensive - no sale.
