Flue Caps
I just installed three of these. So I am not sure how they will perform in the long term. Each looks fairly well constructed. It's also adjustable over the size range that it indicates (8x8 to 13x13). It can also fit a rectangular opening and may even work for circular openings of about 12 to 13 inches in diameter. Only a little bit of assembly was needed (see below), before installation. It's made of a solid metalic cap which is welded to a net like material below. The net actually folded under one more time so not create a gap if installing it over a smaller flue (like the 8 inch size). The holes on the net are somewhat on the large side easily letting in some bugs (and potentially letting out sparks). Then there are four L shaped pieces of metal welded to the net material. These have a grooved space along their length for insersion of the clamps. The only assembly requires installing one clamp each into these grooves, and then you rotate the clamp so they don't fall out. The clamps are held to the groove with a T shaped piece of metal (all from a single construction piece of the clamp). The design inherently produces a bit of wobble between the t-piece shaped part of the clamps and the rest of the structure. The clamps are basically a folded piece of metal that has a serated edge on one end, and a place for a screw (provided) on the other end, with the T-piece sticking off top. After the clamps are placed and positioned on the assembly, you attach the whole thing to your flue using the crews. That process is fairly simple, although I kept hoping the clamps or the screws would not fall off the roof (which would have complicated my life quite a bit). You slide the whole thing (i.e. all four clamps at once) on the flue. You have to position and adjust the clamps to the right flue size as you do this. The clamps are not springy, and given that they attach to the rest of the cap with the T-piece of metal, they tend to tilt up and down a bit as the screws are tightened. It's also a little hard to know how much to tighten the screws. The more I tightened, the more the clamp tilted, and it looked less stable. On the other hand, the screws left an indentation on the flue, which I think means they are solidly attached. Yanking on them, I could not appreciate any significant give. In retrospect, I should have considered using some spacers (like a stack of washers). Another option would be to use some sort of cement or glue to hold the cap more tightly against the chimeny, but I am afraid then the chimney can no longer be cleaned as easily. Two more issues came up. I have four flue's on my chimeny. Fortunately the flue heights are a litte offset. Nevertheless, there is a pottential for the top of the caps bumping into one another and making installation difficult. Also, the screw on the back end of the chimney, away from the house, was hard to access to tighten properly. Winged nuts would have made this a bit easier. In summary:Pros:1. Inexpensinve.2. Relatively Easy Installation.3. Good for keeping rain and big bugs out.cons:1. Concerned about performance in high wind. These are, incidentally, not high wind models/designs. I already expect a bit of rattling noise. I just hope they don't come flying off and causing a lot of damage. I don't expect that in our area, but....2. Galvanize steel has potential for some rust.3. Not good for keeping small bugs out.4. If you have multiple flues on the chimney compare the cost/design of several of these to a single multi cap one.

... simple to adjust and went on my chimney fairly easily. They do their job just fine
The caps were simple to adjust and went on my chimney fairly easily. They do their job just fine. You attach the clamps for holding the cap into the main frame and use screws to secure everything. The screws will do minor damage to bricks or whatever else is at the top of your chimney (I'm not an expert on chimneys by any stretch of the imagination so I don't know what materials are generally at the top of a chimney). Considering that isn't very visible it's not a big deal. The one knock is that the clamps for adjusting to fit on a chimney are loose and need to be installed into the main frame. One fell out while I installing three of these chimney caps on my house and I had to climb down my ladder and look for it on the ground below. It doesn't hamper the long term viability of the product, but does leave the potential for the clamps to be lost down your chimney or somewhere in your yard. For the price, I recommend these chimney caps.

good buy for the $
mounting system is actually very good. however the screws supplied are not the best option. Had they supplied self tapping screws, it would go through the typical sheet metal mounting. once a pilot hole is drilled, the screws go in nicely. so basically. make sure you purchase screws for the type of material you are going to mount it to whether it's masonry or metal.

Wow! What a Chimney Cap!
I'm a tad behind re. this item. Installed it during the summer and just a couple days ago, built a fire, which I have doing the last several days. The warmth angle depends on how high you set your thermostat. We were warm. This cap should keep the rain/snow out of the chimney when there is no fire present. It can also keep pests at bay, like sqirrels and birds. Good deal. I'm happy.

Make sure every part is inclued with your order.
The box that my chimney cap came in was crushed in places. The item was evidently a returned chimney cap because the warranty slip was missing and the screws were in an unsealed bag. How will I go about submitting my 5 year warranty.
