Why is it for boys? What happens to a girl if she plays with it?

We generally recommend this set for children ages 8 and up. If a kid who likes to build things this is the toy to get. The girls also love these. It is a STEM toy that makes kids use their hands, follow directions and exercise perseverance. It will take him/her a few hours to get this built and definitely worth the effort.

Are the pieces compatible with legos?

It's a little different build mechanism than Legos. Such as axles, pins and gears. They come in different shapes and angles. But some of the pins seem to be compatible.
