Good Quality Softbox
I have a couple of Amaran lights, so I’m familiar with the brand and very happy with it. This softbox is the same high quality I’ve come to expect from Amaran. Everything is made really well on this softbox, and the material and hardware are good quality. Even the storage bag is well made and has nice padding and good quality zippers to wrap around the softbox.Given the size of the softbox, it does take a little effort to get it set up as you must snap the ribs into place. Once in place, it holds it’s shape well and is very sturdy. It seems durable like it will last a long time. The Bowens mount and surrounding ring is protected by what I believe are silicone pieces. They are removed before use. The mount is correctly sized and I had no issues with using it with Amaran, Godox and some off brand lights. The inside of the softbox is a reflective silver. There is an inner diffusion piece that has hook and loop tabs. I got some nice results with just using the inner diffusion and a flash. It’s almost like having a huge beauty dish. There is also another diffusion fabric that is attached with hook and loop tape around the entire perimeter. Finally, there is a grid that also attaches around the perimeter with hook and loop tape. I used the softbox with both constant light and flash and was very pleased with the results. The light spread with just diffusion is great and the grid is nice for directional light.Given the size of the softbox, I would recommend having a heavy duty light stand and making sure to use sandbags. I only used the softbox inside. I don’t see me using it outside unless it’s a very calm day and I find a need for it.The softbox is easy to disassemble and when finished it easily slips into the carrying case which has ample room (You don’t have to “fight” to get it back in the bag. Well done, Amaran!). I feel like Amaran really shows professionalism in it’s appearance.I would definitely recommend this softbox. The price point seems very fair to me for the great quality you are getting. This is definitely one of my new favorite pieces of gear and is getting much more use than I had anticipated.

Great performance, ease of use and more!
OK… I’m loving the Amaran Light Dome 90 for a list of reasons. I’ve used it with a number of my LED lights, ranging from 40W to over 200W as well as with my Godox AD200 and AD100 Pro strobes. The quality of light it produces leaves nothing to be desired. And the fact that it includes a grid, something that can be a large additional expense with some softboxes, is a huge benefit. In fact, the cost-to-performance ratio can’t be ignored. This guy punches well above its weight, rivaling the performance of softboxes costing several times its price tag.But I’m also loving the ease of setting up and collapsing the Light Dome 9. I’ve put up with light boxes for years that had to be assembled from a bag of parts each time you wanted to use them. I hated putting those puppies together and taking them apart. The strength it required to bend those stiff metal rods to insert them into the holes around the perimeter of the Bowens mount was just crazy. I eventually resorted to leaving some of those older boxes assembled most of the time, greatly complicating storage and transporting them. While a Bowens mount is still a must for me, putting up with that inconvenience and waste of time is no longer required. Fortunately, an increasing number of manufacturers are offering light modifiers that open and close pretty easily. The Amaran Light Dome 90 is a breeze to open and close. While there are a few systems that open more like an umbrella, and some are a few seconds quicker to open and close, I feel like Amaran offers a stronger framework when opened than some of those others. In fact, the overall construction feels like a much more expensive product. Some of my first softboxes were constructed of a heavier material, but heavier is not always better, especially when mounting a good-sized softbox and light on a boom, or even when just toting gear to a shoot. The Amaran Light Dome achieves durable construction without adding unnecessary weight. It’s the perfect balance. The inner and outer diffusers attach quickly and effortlessly with hook-and-loop fabric. I have had softboxes that use little metal spring clips to attach the inner diffuser to fabric loops on the softbox’s inner wall. Those are a royal pain. The actual material used to attach the Light Dome’s outer diffuser is a type of velcro-esque material that I’ve not seen before. It offers all the gripping power needed, but is surprisingly narrow, leaving room for a more traditional wide Velcro-type strip around the included grid to attach to the inside of the Light Dome’s front edge.Once collapsed, the Light Dome slides easily into the slim (8” diameter), 30”-long cylindrical bag that zips open at one end and along the side. Everything packs away as quickly and easily as it slides out for use. The rugged carrying bag offers two integral straps that make it easy to carry. I’ve found I can slip my arm through both straps and easily carry the bag over my shoulder, freeing my hands to carry other gear. The Light Dome’s 90cm diameter is a great size for portraiture, podcasting and more. It is the size of box I most often grab as it meets so many needs. If I had to depend on one softbox diameter, it would be 90cm. The Amaran Light Dome 90 is deeper than some modifiers of the same diameter, however, which should be noted, as it limits how high you can raise the light in a room with low ceilings when you’re wanting to light a standing adult from slightly above. So, it’s no wonder I’m loving the Amaran Light Dome 90. It offers everything I need: great performance, ease of use, quality construction, Bowens mount compatibility and yes, even affordability! This thing earns an easy 5-star rating!
