The fish mouth spreader seems to lock the bottle neck in place making it easy to prevent spillage over the fire
Dear Readers;Tip Your hats to Liberty Mountain for sending me my first (and not last) Nalgene Standard 38oz. Stainless Steel water Bottle! They sent it to me at a time when i was having a hard time finding THIS PARTICULAR 38oz. SIZE.Readers, please be aware to: Check the Nalgene website first to get the CORRECT MODEL NUMBER BEFORE ORDERING! I read many reviews of customers who were very disappointed and received the wrong size!MY REVIEW:What convinced me to purchase the Nalgene Standard 38OZ. Stainless Steel Bottle; was that the Nalgene had a reinforced thick wide bottle neck to allow you to safely remove the Nalgene Bottle from the campfire using a fish mouth spreader tongs. The fish mouth spreader seems to lock the bottle neck in place making it easy to prevent spillage over the fire. The Nalgene Standard 38OZ. Stainless Steel Bottle fitted my CONDOR water bottle pouch like a glove. You can be able to store some small emergency items or food bars in it for quick access. The Nalgene Standard 38OZ. Stainless Steel Bottle top;Although; I do like the Unique Ergonomic Lanyard Paracord loop design on the High Balistic Plastic bottle cap. I have to research further; to replace this Plastic Bottle cap.I would have preferred a Nalgene Standard 38OZ. Stainless Steel Bottle Cap; that also has a Stainless Steel cable loop instead of a Paracord loop The Paracord loop on the Bottle cap feature is a great idea if you are not going to use the Nalgene to boil water in your camp fire. If you do use this Nalgene in the campfire consider buying some !/8' Bungie Shock cord from PARACORD PLANET to replace the used cap loop cord.I was watching a video where the pack water bottle holder was too small for his Nalgene Bottle. The bottle kept falling out. to prevent this;I would suggest to attach a Nite-Ize #3 "S"BINER to the Nalgene cap loops and pack to safely secure the bottle to your back pack. This is a great compact quality product that I would buy again!Sincerely;Tony Tirado

it's good
Great Product. It's a Nalgene bottle only stainless, what's not to love? It is heavy compared to the plastic bottles but I don't notice much difference once they're full. It's tough, I dropped it into a rocky creak bed from about 18' up and hardly a scratch, it was about 1/2 full at the time. This bottle is NOT insulated, if you use it for cold drinks it will sweat. You can fully remove the lid and lanyard to cook in this bottle. I've cooked with the bottle directly over the fire, works great for soups and what not. It does get a bit nasty after being over the fire. Some discoloration, not much but a good stainless scrub pad when you get home and you're good to go. Only down side, if you don't like the taste of water out of stainless it might not be for you. It bugs my wife, I don't notice it.

Well built.. great for camping or 72 hr. kit
My research into SS single-wall water bottles led me to the Nalgene 38 oz as the best choice for my needs. When mine arrived, I was skeptical that it was a 38 oz bottle as it seemed a bit smaller than I expected. However, I measured the volume, and it holds true to the description. Mine is built like a tank, and when full and turned upside down, does not leak. There are no defective welds as far as I can tell. I filled it with cold water and it felt cold, then washed it out with hot water and it felt hot. It's definitely single-wall and not insulated. With the GSI cup and a lid, this bottle will be an integral component of my camping and/or 72 hr kit. I am very happy with this bottle.

Excellent "Nalgene" quality
The 32 Oz Nalgene Stailess Bottle that I ordered and received is not the "Backpacker" model shown in this review with "tapered" sides where the diameter of the bottle is less then at the top. Mine was actually is the "Standard" 32 Oz model which has "straight" sides maintaining the same diameter from top to bottom. I contacted the seller and they did confirm that it was in fact the "Standard" model which is the same profile as Nalgene's Polycarbonate water bottles but made in Stanless Steel. It was exactly what I was looking for and fullfills all of my requirements. I carry it with me (along with basic survival items) everytime I go for a hike or ride my Mountain bike. Excellent "Nalgene" quality, durable thickness and leakproof due to machined/forged treads (not just cold pressed into the steel) and "Standard's" larger diameter base makes it more stable then the tapered "Backpacker" model makes it excellent bottle and a great price!

Not disappointed but definitely needed cleaning
You should always wash new containers and this one is no exception. As with many reviewers, I was trying to decide between this and the 40 oz Kleen Kanteen. Pricing is more consistent with the Kleen Kanteen but when the Nalgene was actually a dollar less I decided to go with this one.I'm glad I read several reviews that described the metallic smell and the interior weld seam. A little sandpaper fixed the seam and a lot of vinegar fixed the smell. And I mean a LOT. It's not the metal itself that's causing the taste/smell but the oils and deposits left over from manufacturing. A food grade acid, such as vinegar, can get in there and clean it out but you'll have to use more than you'd think.Just bite the bullet and fill up the container at least halfway with white vinegar. You can dilute it a little but I'd keep it fairly concentrated. Keep the bottle next to you throughout the day and keep shaking it and flipping it upside down every so often. The good part about the Nalgene is that it can stand on it's cap - not super sturdy but well enough to get that vinegar everywhere inside. Keep the vinegar in there all day, or at least several hours. Wash it again with a good bottle brush and dish soap and you should be good to go. If you're not satisfied with the results try it a second time. I do not recommend any industrial solvents - stick with food grade vinegar! So yes, one star off for having to sand down the weld seam. Although mine didn't look too bad. I still feel better about cleaning it up.
