Q: How do you determine what size your child needs?

First of all, buy one that is adjustable (most are on shoulders and sides). I went with size of shirt my son was currently wearing and ordered the next size to allow for growth. At first we had the Velcro as small as possible; as he grew we adjusted so it fit comfortably tight. A typical size chart: XS - 4/5, S - 6-6x, M - 7/8, L - 10/12, XL - 14/16.

Q: Is this vest: length 20" x width 36". What is used to tighten it, can the width area be tightened to 30"?

My daughter is a size 10/12. Fits her well (medium) you can take it apart in 2 completely separate pieces—front and back. Velcro on both shoulders and on both sides to tighten. The sides have 2 tabs so you can make it tighter and looser in the chest and belly area. This is the same one she uses at school that came from the special ed department.
