Better than expected
I purchased to read and be entertained not expecting much depth in the storyline, I was pleasantly surprised.

Decent attempt on a complex topic
Well, first off the bat I do want to state that have been a tad generous because as a longtime marvel comics and X-Men fan I have been waiting for this development - hands up those of you who don't know that in comics no one does forever - for a long time and don't want to discourage the writers who took a gamble on this plot. The art is competent and some scenes very well done to relay the writer's point although I felt that it was inconsistent. It doesn't scale the dizzying heights of the first story sec in Ultimate X-Men but neither gets anywhere close to mediocrity as in well really any recent JLA trade paperback. If the artwork were a coffee then it would be your aunt Rosie's Nescafe with milk and just one sugar on a cold winter evening. Much appreciated given the context but no defining characteristic that screams stand out brilliant on its own.I found myself appreciating certain scenes on second reading better and being thankful that the writers and artists managed to get the balances just right between how many people are touched on an intense level and the need to move the story along. A very difficult feat given Jean Grey's long absence and previous significance in the original marvel comics universe. It probably won't make many people's list of top ten trade paperback novels, mine included, but it will never be at the bottom either. Read, think and enjoy!

Jean Grey Returns
Liked the story, great cast of Xmen but if your not up to date with the story line (at the point anyway) you might be. little list as I was. That is the reason I have given it initially 4 stars but expect to up it to 5 once I go back and read up to this point

Gotta love a red headed super hero
Jean Grey is back from the dead again... Great art and story and lots of pleasing cameos. It’s a shame some of the variant covers at the very end were boobylicious. Gave me awkward feels.

Very good X-Men story
The storyline is good and carries you all the way to the end.The artwork is excellent. It requires a bit of knowledge of the X-Men world though. The story assumes that you know about previous events and various decades of X-Men development. But most of it can be guessed.Well worth a read.

“Send everybody!”
Phoenix Resurrection: The Return of Jean Grey collects the five-issue mini-series that sees the Phoenix force back on Earth looking for a new host (or an old one): be sure to read Jean Grey Vol. 2: Final Flight before this if you can, but it is not actually essential, and the two stories apparently both lead into the new “X-Men Red” title.Anyway, this is one of those big event stories with hordes of X-Men in it, and one of those “is it/isn’t it?” stories that we all think we know the answer to, even though Marvel have pulled bait-and-switch games with us in the past. This is an excellently illustrated and written story, with Professor K taking the lead and sending various X-teams off to check things out as the Phoenix-force starts manifesting in places that long-time readers will recognise, with the numerous teams keeping the numbers manageable for the reader and the artist, and allowing characterisation to flourish in ways that big massive team scenes seldom allow. We also see (a) Jean Grey living in a small-town environment and waitressing at the local diner, where things are obviously wrong, though the mystery is of course which scenario is playing out there, and we don’t find out until the grand finale. There is plenty of humour and references scattered about, with the two Bobby’s making the same joke to different teams, and even humour (and a double-entendre) in the dream sequences:“My name is Erik. I was friends with your old teacher.“Oh. Mr Claremont?”“No. Not him.”“Well Erik, what can I get for you?”“What would you have if you could have anything, Jean?”“The lumberjack is a favourite of mine.”You need to wait until Jean delivers the order to the kitchen for the punch-line though. This really is a grown-up story and not just a big-giant-team-up and fight-to-yet-another-death; well…Logan: “I know what I have to do”.
