factory part fits well
The adapter ring is the Canon factory part and fits the G1X perfectly. It is made of a plastic material that seems sturdy, but I wonder how long it will hold up. I'm pretty careful with my equipment, but this will likely reside in a folding filter holder/pouch. I don't think it would take much to snap this ring if it wasn't supported/protected.Edit - after owning the adapter for quite a while, I can say that the aftermarket brand's metal adapters are much better. The Canon plastic adapter is VERY difficult to remove from the filters on occasion, almost as if it is cross-threaded, but it definitely is not. I've heard/read other people's experiences are similar. There are at least two other alternatives on Amazon that are about a 1/3 of the price of the Canon adapter and are made of metal, just like the ring that filter is made from. I strongly suggest getting one of the metal ones. I own the plastic Canon one (the item that this review is for), and two different metal ones bought through Amazon. Either of the two metal ones are fine.

Perfect fit on a Canon G1X
Rather than mess with a lens cap when using my G1X, I ordered this adapter and a B+W XS-Pro Clear UV Haze with Multi-Resistant Nano Coating filter. The combination adds a minimum depth to the camera. I also ordered a Canon E-58U 58mm Snap-On Accessory Lens Cap. When I'm using the camera the lens cap can stay in the case or in my pocket, and the lens is nicely protected by a great UV filter. The adapter and filter mounted easily, and have been staying put. The Canon cap snaps on and off easily. All purchased from Amazon.com.

The Best for your G1X
This fit the best on Canon G1X.I understand it is plastic, yeah... it feels cheap and it is actually more expensive than other metal adapter.However, after trying on a metal adapter, I found out that the metal one is too hard and will scratch your camera. I am worry about the metal will cause damage and wear on my camera.This plastic one fit the best.So I will stick to this Canon made plastic adapter,I would rather screw up this plastic adapter since it just costs $25, than ruin you $600 camera.

Costs more but makes me more confident in its use
I still think this is the better option than some of the third party offerings, even if they are made of metal. The action of a metal filter holder and the plastic camera barrel is not a good match, in my opinion, for reasons of wear on the camera.Since the camera is the most expensive part, I would like to minimise the risk. This is an expensive camera and I want to know that the part fitting is an exact design for the lens.

Cheaply-Made
A cheap, thin, adapter ring for lens filter made and sold by Canon. Plastic threads!! What were they thinking? Retails for $30. Everything about the Powershot GX-1 says "quality made". This accessory says "cracker-jack prize". I hope someone makes an alternative adapter at half the cost.

The FA-DC58C PLASTIC Filter adapter.
Most Canon products I have purchased are very good quality. When I received my FA-DC58C I was very surprised it is made of plastic and costs over $30. Canon should be embarrassed to put their name on this product. I bought the RainbowImaging 58mm METAL Filter Adapter recently and I am very satisfied with it.
