Easy to read
I purchased this thermometer on the advice of our Chimney Sweep company. They recommended getting one so that we maintain proper temperature in our wood burner. Burning at the right temp helps prevent creosote and we had a lot of it in our chimney last year. I choose this thermometer because I liked the colors. I wanted to be able to read it at a distance. We attached it to the pipe using the safety screw. The unit has a magnet, but my husband wanted to use the safety screw that came with it, and that made sense to me. My husband drilled a tiny hold in the pipe and placed the thermometer on, then the screw. Drilling a hole smaller than the screw ensure that the screw can adhere to the pipe tightly. I like that I can look at it from a distance and tell if I need to open up the flu more. I sit at my desk about 20 feet away and can see whether I am in the yellow, orange or red zone. I can also see it from the couch which is further away. You can see where the white needle is at. Overall, I am happy and pleased with this product. No problems and works great so far!

Very accurate, unfortunately mine broke when I dropped it only 2'
I've been burning wood for 40 years in a wood stove and this is a must have item. It's a good unit, but I was a little disappointed when I dropped it only about 2 feet on a wood floor, and the spring weld point failed, and the spring came off. No way to easily reattach it either. So just be careful with it, it's more fragile than others i've had. But when I got this last year I compared the readings to 2 others I have (all cheap, bought at hardware store) and this showed a bit higher than those. So I was burning my stove a bit hotter than I'd thought...not good I trust this one the most, and others have confirmed the accuracy. So I'm replacing it with the unit. To be completely safe, you should also get a stove TOP thermometer. If your damper/baffle is closed on an airtight stove, the stovepipe will not be completely accurate since the hot air is being retarded by the closed damper. That's where the stovetop comes into play, so you can still know when it's time to add a log, or reduce air, or whatever.

Great thermometer / almost as good as the older model I replaced
I needed to replace a 25-30 year old Chimguard thermometer. I received this on time. It works as expected. I burn the stove hot to start with. The wood that I use is red and white oak and is usually 2 years drying. We don't need to let it go out since in the Dutchwest stove has an ashtray. The old thermometer was easier to read from a distance. The font is darker and larger on the old model. I'm sure the new one will work just as well. You need to have some kind of flue thermometer with a woodstove especially if you are burning wood that is not as dry as it should be. The old one fell off the stove pipe since it was too hot. Magnetic let go. As I was writing this I realized the center hole on the new one is for a retaining screw. I will use this. The accompanying photo shows the older model that I took apart.

Does the trick!
We purchased a home with a wood stove and took some time this year to give it some love. After doing some research, I discovered that it is recommended to have a thermometer on the chimney, which we haven't had in the 3 years of living here. Received this in the mail quickly, and it looks exactly like the picture. Our stove is completely black, and I wasn't sure I wanted something so colorful, but it's great because we can see the temperature is ok without having to look too closely at it. Price is comparable to other sites. We haven't installed the screw because our chimney doesn't get too hot so it stays put.

A must have for wood burning stoves
It works well, and so far I haven't had any problems with it. I try to keep my fire in the orange part of the scale and it seems to be the sweet spot for wood burning. It is hot enough to produce a mostly smoke free fire, without being so hot as to risk a chimney fire. I try to get my fire quickly up to the upper range, 400-475 degrees, then damp it to keep it there. After the fire burns down, I add logs before it gets into the yellow. about 250 degrees, in order to keep it going without excessive smoke. It works like a champ.

Easy to read, attaches easily, does the job
This is fine and easy to read. It's magnetic, and can attach to any part of a metal stove. It does have an option for a screw, and screwing it in is recommended, although I haven't done it and it doesn't appear to be necessary. The colors make it easy to read, although the indicator is pale and you need to get reasonably close to it to see where it is (ie, I can't see from across the room where the needle is sitting). I like the colored "zones." If you have a subtle, decorator room and an exotic wood-burning stove, the colors might be a bit of a harsh "ornament" (I found it distracting and not particularly attractive), but you can always stick it on the side of the stove or something. A fine device for its price. I'm not sure why it's called "exciting"; I mean, it's a thermometer!

Easy to read and attach to stove pipe; extremely helpful and well made.
A stove pipe thermometer was recommended by my chimney sweep last fall but I kept putting off purchasing one. I researched and found that this was rated as a top model/brand for using. It is truly a great help. I can keep the fire regulated much better now so that my wood burns efficiently and my stove pipe and chimney don’t get too hot from running the stove hotter than needed. It is very simple to use and for all intensive purposes, is an accurate enough measure of the temperature of the stove pipe.

Graphics much smaller and not easy to read
We've owned the same make and model for years, so we decided to replace it in case our old device was becoming inaccurate. The new unit seems to read temperature properly, but -- in comparison to the old unit -- the numbers are VERY HARD to read! I'm guessing that the font has gone from about 14 pt to only 10 pt, and the readings have much less intensity (i.e., far lighter). This is not a good value for $30.
