Healthy bare-root plants. The saga begins.
April 17, '26: Day -6: Placed order. Delivery date was given as April 30 which seemed a bit far out. I was hoping it wouldn't result in degraded plants. April 23, '26: Day 0: Plants arrived in the mail a week earlier than schedule, so I was happy about that. Plants are well sealed in the package and look great: no mold or mildew and not dried out at all. These look like healthy bare-root plants. My new asparagus bed was already prepared and waiting, so I had them in the ground within the hour. I fully expect these to grow well. It will likely take 3-6 weeks for shoots to appear. I'll be watching. April 30, '26: Day 7: Three plants have sent up small shoots, one in each. Too small to harvest for sure but that will change next year. Seven plants to go. May 7, '25: Week 2: Eight plants now have shoots. The ones visible last week are growing fast. Two plants to go. May 14, '25: Week 3: Nine of 10 plants have shoots, though one is a laggard. The 10th probably won't make it. 90% success isn't bad. I've got 5 Purple Passion from the same company growing in pots and doing great, so I'll replace the one non-starter with one of the Purple Passions. By fall I should know which plants are female which I'll replace with male Purple Passions now growing in pots. May 29, '25: 4-1/2 weeks: All plants are alive but 2 are real laggards. I replaced one and might replace the other. Most are 1 to 1.5 feet tall and have what looks like proto-flowers. I'm concerned that those might be female plants. Jersey Knight is a male-dominant variety, so I won't be happy if most are female. I'm hoping that the male plants weren't selected out after the first year and sold to commercial growers for a higher price while the female plants were grown for another year to be sold to unsuspecting home gardeners. That probably isn't the case, but time will tell. My purple passion plants growing in pots are much more vigorous overall with most about 3-feet tall. June 6, 6th week: All plants are up, most about 18 inches and most have many flowers. I have two runts about 4 inches high. I've replaced one and will likely replace the other. I am quite concerned that all but 1 remaining plant is female. I have learned that Jersey Knight is male dominant WE STARTED FROM SEED, but nurseries don't start from seed and bare root crowns will produce about 50% female plants. By random chance, a 10-crown bundle could be 8 to 10 of 10 female. These will continue to grow, and by fall I will know with certainty their sex. In the meantime, I have ordered Jersey Knight seeds and will be starting those in pots. They will serve as backups which I will likely need. If I was to do this again, I would skip the crows and go right to seeds in order to get 90% male plants. With crowns, I might have to buy 50 to get just 10 males. June 23, 2-month update: All 10 grew but 2 were just runts. The others are growing slowly. I have now replaced those 2 with Purple Passion plants from the same company. Due to lack of apace, I planted my 6 Purple Passion bare roots in pots, and those have done really well, over-towering greatly the Jersey Knights. I put the removed runt plant in a pot because, why not? Still not sure how many male plants I have.

Worth it!
We live in northern WI and planted 4 sets of these crowns about a month and a half ago. I am pleasantly surprised by how many asparagus shoots came up! A couple even looked fairly thick - we could potentially be able to pick a few next summer already. Hoping these crowns provide yummy asparagus for years to come โบ๏ธ

Great Asparagus seller
Got these in the ground about a week after the sent them. Soaked them in water for about 45 minutes while I dug the trench with my son. We bought a bag of play sand to mix the dirt with. Built a small mount the entire length of our trench, placed the asparagus crowns drooping over the mounds and covered them till there was half the trench filled, so about 4 inches on top. We have 7 out of 10 that sprouted. Will wait till they are at least 4 inches above the trench and then fill it in. These were much more durable than all the other asparagus crowns we've tried. Even from reputable sellers. Finally got some to stay alive and sprout. Hopefully the other 3 were just a tad deeper and will sprout through the dirt soon.

Avoid Seller
Avoid seller...their mistakes are your fault! Purchased 10 roots and only received 9. They would not send the missing root. I initiated a return and received bad attitude from the seller. Roots arrived moldy but seem viable.

Arrived healthy and good sized.
I was very impressed with these asparagus roots. They were good sized and arrived healthy. I would say the price was reasonable for the quality of the roots.

Female plants. Buyer beware.
The crowns arrived looking healthy and sprouted normally. Unfortunately 30% of what they sent turned out to be female and went to seed. When I contacted them they told me females are healthy plants and they would not replace them. If you were shopping for Jersey night asparagus it is undoubtedly because you are wanting a male plant to improve your garden yield. To send a female plants and then say they are healthy and I should be satisfied is deceptive. Buyer beware.
