Very good walk-around lens
This lens is a real gem, I use it on my Nikon d750. The aperture ring must be set to f22 to avoid getting an error message. I was hoping I could set the f-stop with the aperture ring, but for some reason on the newer Nikon cameras you must control the f-stop with the camera. The lens is sharp and the auto-focus seems to work well as long as it's not too dark (not the best in low light). To manually focus the lens, the camera must be set to Manual Focus. When I first got this lens the photos were soft. After a little experimentation I found that it was back focusing. I set the auto focus fine tune to -10 and the soft photos became sharp. It's not the sharpest lens I have but it does a good job for what it is.I paid a premium for this lens in mint condition, but I'm glad I did, I should get years of service from this well built lens.I also have the Nikon 28-85mm f/3.5-4.5 Autofocus Zoom. It's also a good solid lens, a little bit sharper than the 28-105.I'm finding that I like the older 'made in Japan' lenses better than the overpriced heavy VR lenses. I take a lot of photos using a tripod, so the VR isn't important to me. I also have some older 'Made in Japan' primes that I've had since the late 70's. The are still extremely sharp. Since they don't have autofocus, I use Live View to manually set the focus - this works well.If you're looking for a good walk around lens, don't hesitate. My wife and I have a wedding venue and I take a lot of pics inside and out. Some of my best photos have come from this lens.It can't compare to some of the very expensive lenses, but because of the solid build and good performance and low price I give it a 5 star. For the last year or so I've been using my 28-85mm f3.5-4.5 and find it a very good all around lens.I've recently come back to the 28-105 and it seems the photos are a little soft and not very sharp. So I went into lightroom and increased the contrast and clarity and the photos now look sharp again. I've heard other photographers say the lens doesn't have good contrast and I think it can appear that the sharpness is soft. See the second photo. It seems that these older lenses need more work in lightroom whereas my NIkon 80-200mm 2.8 D only needs minor lightroom adjustments.I just bought a Nikon 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR and will compare it with the other two lenses and get back to my review. I'm looking for a lighter and less expensive alternative to the Nikon 24-70mm VR lens.

it is not a lens to attach to a high resolution camera like the Nikon D810 to show off the camera or ...
The focal length range of this lens is ideal for a walkabout lens. It has little distortion. It is sharp for a consumer grade zoom lens. Having said that, it is not a lens to attach to a high resolution camera like the Nikon D810 to show off the camera or make a huge enlargement. I took this lens on a recent vacation along with a 50mm f1.4 prime lens to use on my D810, and the pictures taken with the 50mm lens are significantly sharper from corner to corner. I suppose if you're just viewing pictures on a computer screen or limiting your enlargements to "normal" sizes, it really makes little difference, and the price of this lens used is a bargain.Update: Having more experience with this lens on two vacations, I am more impressed than I was initially. It is quite sharp over about 90% of the frame on my full frame D810. Sharpness falls off at the far edges and the corners, but in the center and over most of the frame, the sharpness does compare well with my prime lenses, 50mm f1.4 D, 35mm f2.0D and 24mm f2.8D. If mounted on a DX camera, the edges and corners would be cropped out, and if one chooses a 5/4 aspect ratio for their pictures, corresponding to an 8x10 enlargement, the same thing would occur. The one thing this lens lacks is vibration reduction, but to get this you have to buy a lens that is significantly larger and more expensive. I feel that this lens is one of the best bargains out there. I don't know if I can upload a full sized picture. Nope. Look at the first picture to get an idea of how much the second is magnified. This is a handheld shot, by the way.

A great choice Update.
A few years ago I gave up my Nikon equipment in favor of smaller, lighter to carry M43 mirror less stuff.I actually just gave my Nikon stuff to someone new to this type of photography and really wanted to learn but it was a little cost prohibited at the time.I really now became interested in Nikon again with there mirrorless Z mount system. So I bought a Nikon Z5. I love this system. I also decided to stay with only Z mount lenses and not adapt F mount lenses to my new camera. Most of my reasoning was the cost Nikon wants for their FTD adaptor.I recently re-thought this and purchased a block adaptor which would allow me to use F mount lenses manually on my Z5.The only F mount lens I really missed was this 28-105 with macro. I really loved this lens. Since I gave the old one away. I bought this one. I am really happy with my choice.I did a lot of great work with my old lens especially close up/macro work. Plus the aesthetics of this lens are awesome. I think the results are even better now on my Z5.I also have an adaptor to use this with my M43 cameras. WOW.I bought this lens used… It’s in great shape. I love it, am using it on Nikon D600.Good all-around carry lens. The macro is fantastic.I used it to shoot a small wedding. It covered all situations well.Only issue (not the lens)… The lens did not come with the original lens hood. I purchased a wide angle metal hood but it vignettes at 28 to just over 35mm when I have a filter on the lens. The original hood mounts back on the body of the lens. So would prolly work better. So I need to find an original Nikon hood. Else I’m a happy camper.

Older Nikon lens but still a real gem
This lens might be an older Nikon lens, but it still performs very well and have been extremely happy with the performance thus far. I will be taking this on a trip soon, and hope to capture some great full frame photos with it while attached to my D700. The AF works great, but only if you have a compatible camera with it's own AF motor, such as my D700, as the lens does not have this natively. The macro function takes a bit to get used to at first, as it there is a couple of steps to enable this, but overall not deal breaker by any means. This seems like a good all around lens, and am looking forward to travelling with it, and seeing how it performs.

Excellent lens
This lens is permanently attached to my Nikon D700 and is an excellent performer at all focal lengths. Prints up to A3 super(the limit of my printer) are pin sharp. This lens has Nikon's typical excellent build quality, but is not too heavy or bulky.I only remove it from my camera on the few occasions when I need something wider or longer. I also possess the 24 - 120 lenswhich doesn't perform nearly as good as this one and displays noticeable barrel distortion at the wide end. All in all anexcellent zoom lens.

Bargain
You can't buy these new and they come recommended on the net, so I bought 2nd hand for use on FX digital bodies. This is a lovely lens optically despite some play in the extended barrel. The pictures are razor sharp on a 20Mpixel D610 and just as sharp on a D810 - almost as sharp as my Tamron 24 - 70 which costs 5 times as much and weighs twice as much as this lens. This sample is just a little stiff when zooming slowly to adjust the faming and it's a bit annoying for an otherwise surperb lens. This is proabably sample variaion and I'm going to see if it can be fixed. The other problem is that the lens barrel rotates as the lens is zoomed making a polariser ir ND filter use protracted and fiddly.

Feels more like the original Nikon primes than the newer G lenses
It has just arrived and I have taken a few shots with my full frame Nikon D750 and they look good so far.The lens feels solid enough and the controls are reasonably pleasant to use- no real problem with the zoom or the macro. It balances well on the D750 and looks the part. Feels more like the original Nikon primes than the newer G lenses, which is no bad thing IMO. I will follow up after some more real world tests, but I'm pleased with this lens, feels nice, not too heavy and great value for money (£180 instead of £600+ for the new FX 'kit' lenses). No VR but since using the D750 I've had great low light shots due to a combination of excellent camera handling and very usable high ISO.This lens could be just what I need as a family/travel lens, to support my 70-300VR and the primes AFD 24/35/50/85, which are all great and work well on digital. I may treat myself to a new Nikon 20mm f/1.8 N- which I can now afford by not buying the 24-120/28-300).

Great lens
Light and quick with good optics and a pretty good auto focus speed. A tremendous bargain at the price until I can afford one of Nikon's high end lenses. This lens works properly with my FX format camera unlike the DX type lenses which cause vignetting. I am very impressed.
