Exactly what you think it is
This book won't blow your mind, but its exactly as advertised. Other folks complain about the legibility of the font since entries are in boldface. This is a legitimate criticism, but if your eyes are fine or you wear the right prescription, you will not be mistaking "i"s for "l"s, trust me.

I don't get the font complaints.
A lot of reviews mention the book using a very poor font but I'm honestly not seeing it. It may just be me though and your experience may vary with vision quality. The book itself is well made and has a ton of useful information. I;m extremely happy I got a hold of this for making my flash cards.

Useful
I'm finding this dictionary of frequency very useful for making flashcards to increase my vocabulary. While there are frequency lists online, the ones I've found don't usually take the time to eliminate all the different forms of a given word. They also don't give example sentences like this book does.

Good book, bad font
I've just received this book and had a chance to look at it, and overall I think it's a great resource, but I'm having a hard time reading the "i"s, as the font used was an extremely poor choice on the author's part. All of the "i"s look like lowercase "l"s due to the dot being so thick that it connects to the letter. (In the image, the word for "because" is "weil" with an "i".) For a language resource, a clear readable typeface is essential. I hope the editors read this review and print a new edition in a better font.

Good reference book
This is more than just a list of words listed by frequency. Under the numbered word alternate meanings or related usage may be given. For instance, "verlassen" has 2 meanings listed and "Boden" has 2 related phrases under the main entry. Scattered through the book are information boxes which give words related to some topic, there are 30 words in the plants and gardening box, listed by occurrences per million.

Good Book - But could be a lot better
Overall it is a very useful book for a mid-level student of German, but it has a few serious drawbacks. First of all, the print is very small and difficult to read if you have less than perfect eyesight. Second, although there are helpful German sentences given for the words in the frequency list, there are no English translations for those sentences. OK if you already know German fairly well, but I would think that a beginner would find this very frustrating. If the publishers create a second edition with better print and English translations of the example sentences this would be a much better book.

Provides Focus for Learning German Vocabulary
Every teacher of the German language whose native language is English should have this vocabulary guide. It provides essential data on how often German words occur, which can help prioritize learning when time is short. I have found it motivates learning to know the most commonly used words. I use it in conjunction with a good German/English dictionary.

There are other options, perhaps with better value for your money.
This version (German) of the Routledge Frequency Dictionaries series falls short of the excellent work found in their French version. This example has 4,034 words, vs 5000 in the French. It also fails to provide an English translation of the example sentences, which I, as a learner of German (the reason I bought the book in the first place), would really be grateful for. The French version is 50% larger than the German one for these reasons. A better (in my opinion) alternative is the "2,001 Most Useful German Words (Dover Language Guides German) Paperback – March 21, 2012" for $4.95. This at least has example phrases and English translations. It's a better value.I also have "GERMAN: FAST TRACK LEARNING .The 1000 most used words with 3.000 phrase examples: Focus your English learning on the most frequently used words. Learn the words you need for everyday life (Kindle Edition). This is another good option for $4.99.I don't actually have "The 5000 most commonly used German Words - Vocabulary Training: Learn the Vocabulary you need to know to improve you Writing, Speaking and Comprehension Skills Kindle Edition". I do however know from the Amazon web-page that this one is arranged alphabetically, but has no example sentences. It is $2.99.

Well worth it for cementing your everyday German vocabulary
Found this book very useful in determining the gaps in my German vocabulary knowledge as far as frequently-used words are concerned. Have made a substantial wordlist for study and drilling based on this book.Very useful in my view. The book could have included more grammatical details but once you're past a certain level in German you will hardly need these anyway and such information is not necessary for this work to fulfil its purpose.

Useful
Really useful. I speak decent German but was surprised to find how many very common words I was hazy one. Based on vast volumes of written and spoken German - so a reliable guide.

Not too useful.
This book contains less than you would expect: apart from being relatively short (4000 words, compared to other languages from the same Routledge series who have 5000-10000), this book also have major flaws:-only the gender is indicated for nouns, not the plural (!)-no principal part other than the infinitive is indicated for verbs: preterit and past participle for strong verbs would have been a minimum.-one example per word, sometimes two when the word is really highly polysemic, but that's all.Basically, this book is a list of words. You'll have to look it up again elsewhere, look for more examples, etc. The only use I can see for this book is as a little guide of what vocabulary to study first. But that kind of list is very easy to compile, so you should probably save your money and find for some frequency list of German vocabulary for free online.
