Q: Will this fit on a Pelican 1700 gun case?

All Commando locks will fit the Pelican 1700 series case but the removable Shackle Guard on the Commando Tactical lock is too tight and will not fit. In this manufacturer's opinion, the Tactical is overkill for any plastic case but I appreciate how much we all care for the hardware we cary in Pelican cases. The Tactical lock can be used with or without the removable Shackle Guard.

Q: Will the lock accommodate linking .5" 70 grade chain?

This lock will not hold two links of chain LARGER than 5/16" (up to .65") with the shroud in place. I purchased it for the Pewag 10mm (just over 3/8") security chain. Unfortunately, the shroud opening is just a hair under .65" (per my dial caliper) wide, which makes it just too narrow for two links of ~3/8 chain (of any type). Because of this I am returning the lock. The shackle itself will (barely) accommodate 2 links of 10mm square chain and easily 2 links of 3/8" chain. Commando sells this lock without shroud for under $20. But you lose the protection of the shroud. FWIW, Commando Lock Co, this lock would be FAR MORE USEFUL, very slightly cheaper to manufacture (less material), and no less secure if the shroud had the same (or very slightly wider) opening as the shackle, rather than the .65" shroud opening.
