Is the single port on the left side the same type (size) as the printer output port on my printer that connects to my laptop via usb?

The photo you see isn't a very good one because the box is black; the device has two ports at the rear and seven at the front. The two at the rear are a socket for power and a USB type B socket - the large square type of USB socket - and the device should come with a USB cable to connect to here from your computer (which will have a type A socket). The front has seven type A USB sockets - these are the thin rectangular ones that you'll also find on your PC. The two sockets to the right in the picture are "fast charging" sockets. All the seven are powered (so you can charge your phone from them, for example), but the two on the right, with the battery symbol, are powered to improve charging time. That's the only difference.

Are the usb ports powered from the ac adapter or over the usb cable

The ac adapter powers the hub unless you use a printer type usb to power it.
