How do I get the light to keep my previous settings when using the wall outlet? It keeps turning on to a different light setting each time.

Can you use a light switch or just the remote?

Either/ or. The if the light switch is on then you can use the remote. But you can turn it off with the switch. Just know if the light switch is off the remote will not work until the light switch is back in the on position

Does the actual light, not the remote need batteries? And how do you set the light up to the ceiling?

No the light it self does not use batteries. It hooks to the electrical in your house the same way a standard light fixture is hooked to your electric grid. It is very easy to install if you are replacing a light fixture you already have. There are directions that come with the light. 3 wires to attach to the wires in your ceiling and your done.
