A Pleasant Surprise!
I purchase and listen to a lot of electronica music. It seems to be my genre of choice in recent years. The Amazon computer seems to understand this and makes up an enticing list of electronica items and offers them as recommendations for my consideration. I've discovered a lot of good CDs in this way. One of my recommendations for the last several years has been various albums by Massive Attack, but I've never bought. I'm not certain why. Maybe it's the name. In any case, I've always opted for something else, except I finally bought the latest "Heligoland" CD recently, perhaps just out of curiosity.Well, "Heligoland" was a surprise, that's for certain! I was somehow expecting something brash and bombastic and I got something soft and mellow. Let's put it this way, the music of Massive Attack is closer to that of Air than to that of The Chemical Brothers or The Crystal Method. I tend to prefer the bombastic, I might add. But that's OK, soft and mellow is fine on an occasional basis and I'm enjoying "Heligoland." The music is simple and basic. The rhythmic patterns are nicely laid down and very interesting. The tone progressions are nicely done. The melodies are pleasant and airy. The vocals seem to be wimpy and it takes time to get used to them, but after a while I got to like them. It's computer-based music, but it's less obvious than other similar efforts and shows a lot of thought. Plus, there's all kinds of guest artist in additional to the computer tracks. It's labeled as Trip Hop, but I wouldn't want to pigeonhole it. Massive attack is a one-of-a-kind act and obviously a very experimental effort that sounds like nothing else. It's very pleasant and interesting music!Well, I'm surprised, and it's a pleasant surprise. This music is quite well done. I may look into a couple more Massive Attack albums. Thank you, Amazon computer.Gary Peterson

Long & Short...It's Massive Alright
Well, since it seems the other reviewers have covered the Rolling Stone/critical reviews in a song-by-song format, i see no reason to retrace steps already taken. BTW, nice job by the afore mentioned! Needless to say, if you're a massive Attack fan then you know they are a bit out there in the inovative sense and this album is no different. Where Blue Lines & Protection were easy listens the first time around..preparing us for Mezzanine...this album like 100th Window takes a bit more time to savor. At first listen, it is certainly heady, with a vaguely familiar aroma yet stark in contrast to everything before. 100th Window took me about a month to fall in love with but once I did...bliss. Heligoland I feel much of the same. Very different from what we know but clearly still Massive in undertone. Reminds me a bit of a B-sides album in a way. Songs fit very well together but nothing that's ready for primetime...which is why I suppose we love Massive Attack to begin with. Twice through it now, I like it...it ain't a love affair yet but if history repeats and I unravel the layers...I can see it going into biblical rotation..so long and short: Buy it! C'mon...it's Massive Attack...if you are reading this you know you're gonna buy it whether its good or not cause you have to have everything they print...just so happens that they pulled off another winner so 'One-Click' this bad boy!...enjoy

It's Worth It.
This is a fantastic album.I've owned the digital version for a few years and I consider it a modern classic.I recently got into vinyl and bought this as one of my first ten records. This is a quality product, bar-none.The vinyl pressing, the album packaging & the included art are together the most impressive that I've seen. I felt like I already had my money's worth before playing a single track.FWIW, the outer plastic wrapping said "Made in Germany". I don't have any other albums that weren't made in the U.S., so maybe I'm just getting a taste of what a quality vinyl album really is.Either way, this is an absolute delight to own. Once it's in your hands, you'll know what I mean.If you've entertained any thoughts of purchasing it, I highly recommend that you do.

Me costó soltar la pasta.... pero....
La edición es espectacular, el sonido en vinilo gana todo,... y como siempre a la vanguardia de la creatividad musical. Y no es de los vinilos que se quedan demasiado tiempo en el mismo sitio. XD

This reissue is precisely why I love vinyl..
Like most vinyl collectors & Massive Attack heads, I was ecstatic when I first found out that Heligoland was finally being reissued. And because the Bristol collective take wax seriously, I knew that this was going to be a reissue with substance. What I didn’t expect was a triple gatefold sleeve with tactile cover art, & a glittered finish, a 28 page booklet w exclusive art, and more so two chunky 180g records. In short, this is precisely why I continue to collect records as it represents the absolute best in music you can touch. After geeking out over the stunning sleeve & extras, I finally got to the real show, the wax itself.. Like all Massive Attack albums, it sounds big, rich and vibrant. Especially on Atlas Air (where I didn’t need to mess with my EQ levels at all) as its highs are crisp, its mids level, and its lows full of rumbling bass that doesn’t rumble your speaker casings. So yes, vinyl heads rejoice as this is one mother of an album. I did run into some sleeve damage (because of a shipping mishap), and some saucer warp on one of the records however this was quickly resolved with an exchange through Amazon’s excellent customer service. This is one of those albums that you’ll show off whenever a friend is over listening to music as it represents the best in reissued albums.. It comes with a plethora of extras, and sounds even better than the original, something that never happens with downloadable or streamed music. If you’re a fan, you should have already pre-ordered this. If you’re a collector, this belongs in your library (even if you’re not into Massive Attack). As its price only seems to be climbing, I’d grab one now before it’s too pricey, or better yet, before they’re all gone.Thank god for Massive Attack & thank god for good wax.
