QwikLug Compressor Repair Kit

Saved me some $$$
So here is the background as to why I ended up buying this repair kit...My A/C was not working and I had a service tech from a reputable company in my area come and check things out. The blower outside would run, but the system was not blowing cool air. After verifying that my coolant charge was fine he did some "measurements" on the outside unit. Basically all he did was measure a few of the points where the contactor and start capacitor are located. After appearing to fumble around a little bit he could not really give me a good diagnosis other than to say that the compressor was bad and that it would be $1500 to replace.Needless to say the high price tag and the tech's wishy-washy "inspection" did not sit very well with me. Later on last summer the heat got to be unbearable for the whole family so I decided I needed the peace of mind that the compressor was really the issue. After getting deeper into the outdoor unit, it was plain the see that one of the terminals at the compressor was completely corroded and was disconnected from the compressor terminal. I was able to get online info about my compressor model and the resistances across the terminals seemed to be within spec. Ordered this terminal repair kit and hooked it up and the A/C was blowing cool right away. Not too long afterwards, one of the terminals on the contactor (not one from this repair kit) vibrated loose and burned up causing the unit to stop working again. After easily replacing that, I was back in business. The only complaint that I had with the installation was that the terminals from the repair kit stick out a bit and I had some trouble getting the weatherproof terminal cover on the compressor back in place. I kind of had to force it and I'm sure that it smashed on the terminals a bit. Hopefully they are not pinned in too badly and don't wear through due to vibration in the future.Just want my story to be a lesson to others. While what the technician saw would indicate a bad compressor, he did not take the time to really get to the root of the problem. It makes me wonder if he was halfway through the repair job and saw what the problem really was whether or not he would have said anything or just went ahead and done the whole replacement. Just something to think about. It pays to do your own investigation (as much as you are able and are comfortable doing safely). This repair kit was a life (and wallet) saver for me.

Well designed and mfg'd item
A friend who is an HVAC tech recommended I install this kit on my unit which had corroded contacts/connectors. Well it was very well made and designed, very good instructions on how to install and it worked like a charm. In fact my AC unit works better than it ever has. Apparently the corroded contacts were most likely imapcting the performance of my unit. A small price to pay, if you are just a little handy it's an easy install. The heavier gage kit I would say is the better buy. Very good product.

Could be better
the lugs and the screws are made of brass and this type of material strips very easily. So tightened is not recommended. Therefore, some sore of loctite should be include alone with a recommended torque specification, because otherwise, the vibration will take the screws loose. Finally the wires should be longer than 2 feet for the price charged.

While the cables are OK, the lug ends are ...
While the cables are OK, the lug ends are too large and since I had to replace all three, would not fit. By bending one and nearly breaking off another terminal, they fit.

Great Product!
The Quik QT2810 QwikLug Compressor Terminal Repair Kit was easy to install. Superior to original equipment. These connectors don'tlook like they will burn off like the originals did.

Saved my compressor!
LONG TERM UPDATE:Sold the house 2.5 years later. Had had zero issues with the quiklug. Totally satisfied, just wish it was a little less fiddly to install. But once it is in place it works like a champ.Original Review:I had a compressor power lead abrade through its insulation and short against the compressor's base plate. So I replaced a section of damaged wire and the spade terminal to the compressor. That was a MISTAKE! I didn't realize it at the time, but the spade terminals on compressor lugs are NOT standard spade connectors, and while a standard spade can be made to fit, it will not make good contact and that will cause the new fitting to arc and fail. So, 6 weeks later I wound up with a warm house again due to a burned up spade fitting and badly eroded lug on the compressor.A couple-hours of googling later, I found a possible salvation in the form of QwikLug and Term-Lok. After reading the very few reviews available and a youtube review I settled on QwikLug because of the angled phillips screw -vs- side mounted set-screw. The few reviews that I could find said that Term-Lok was a great product, but securing the set allen screw while suspended upside down inside the condensing unit is no fun. If I had good side access to the compressor I may have made a different choice.Granted, the qwiklug assembly is also a little fiddly; you have to turn the new wire/spade around and insert it the right way, hold the spade over toward the flat side in the connector, slip the assembly over the lug just till it hits the insulation, then hold everything steady while you tighten the screw. It would be nice, and a lot more efficient to install if the wire were permanently attached to the QuikLug or somehow held captive in the proper orientation, but it's not like you're going to be installing one of these kits every week. The youtube reviewer speculated that severe damage to the compressor could result from over-tightening the lug and twisting it. I just held each one steady with pliers as I snugged down the screw. I don't get the feeling (as one reviewer stated) that locktite or torque specs were necessary;I think that the angled configuration of the screw will make it unlikely to back out. The screw's angle acts as a wedge to drive the spade and terminal together. The manufacturer states that it has been tested through 100000 start/stop cycles without loosening.
