Leica DISTO 764558 D8 Hand Held Laser Distance Measurer with Bluetooth and Color Display

Don't like giving negative reviews but Leica deserves a good thrashing. The D8 performs very well as a distance measurer, as does the D5, which sells for hundreds less. However, I bought the D8 mainly for the bluetooth input feature which, as it turns out, doesn't work on 64 bit Windows 7 machines.Or so I think, as the company (at least in my case and in the three weeks since I bought it) has given no response. If you are buying this to use with Win7 64 bit, I suggest you ensure that Leica has gotten its act together.

I originally had another laser measuring device that maxed out at 100'. I needed another instrument to take rough measurements of larger spaces for which my original device would simply not work. So, after checking out all the reviews and speaking to a number of respected appraiser colleagues who use these devices on a daily basis, I selected the Leica Disto D8 device. Wow! No regrets whatsoever! The instructions included are somewhat terse and succinct (just like most technical manuals), but you can get up and running almost immediately taking simple measurements. The advanced functions are also accessible, but only with consultation with the documentation and watching some of Leica's training videos available on Youtube. In case of bright daylight sun, the video functionality of the device really shines through as the normal laser red dot is not visible on the targeted surface. You just aim the crosshairs in the main front viewer at your intended target and hit the measure button, and record the dimensions. Nothing could be easier. The device comes already calibrated, so you don't have to worry about doing any of those things yourself.I highly recommend this device for appraisers, and those of us in both Residential and Commercial Real Estate who need to measure large room dimensions for which a hand tape measure is impractical or impossible due to the length.

Disto 764558 D8 is perfect product for professional measuring . I use it for a two weeks and am very glad with my choice .There is nothing but perfect feedback from me to them , whom wants to buy it . Quality is perfect, Only two things are strange .It really needs a key lock because in a backpack or on your belt usually it turns on by itself and also really needs light on a keyboard like all of the sell phones have . Its just my advice to manufacturer. Bluetuth works perfect . Installation on your PC takes aminute . So , I recommend it to everyone who is looking for such a product . You really get what you pay for.P.S. I purchased this equipment in November 2011, now after 7 months of light usage the equipment is not starting for no apparent reason, I spoke with regional manager for Leica "Greg", who said that they can do nothing about that since the plastic screen cover was cracked, the plastic cover cracked about a month after purchase from a very light impact which did not affect the performance of the equipment, and now they don't want to even look at the equipment because of this. beware of Leica's useless long warranty, and the delicate equipment that may crack from falling a foot off the ground, their customer support sux

I had used Leica distance meters for a long time. My last one was an A8, which is a fabulous product. The new D8 is even better in all respects. From camera resolution (and color!), which really helps locate your target, to size, weight and ruggedness. I never had a problem with the A8 (I took good care of it) but this one seems like it will last a lifetime. I don't use the Bluetoooth feature, but it is definitely a plus for someone who translate his measurement to a CAD program. I recommend it without hesitation.

Unbelievable accuracy. Need tripod to use many functions and Leica brand is very nice. USB connectivity works very well, to include a variety of programs. Only bad thing is display is extremely hard to see in daylight because of the glossy screen. Even shading with hand only marginally helps. Needs some type hood?

Very precise, easy to measure, light and strong housing. Data transfer is very simple and fast. Its performance was above my expectation.

Had to return and reorder because there are issues with some of the meters. In those meters, the batterys drain completely even when properly turned off. If you order one make sure you check that. Talked to Leica, they admitted upfront there had been some problems and that I should return the product through Amazon. Phoned Amazon and within a few minutes and no hassle was able to return the unit. Decided to take a chance on a second meter. Meter was actually 30 dollars cheaper and works fine. Generally the meter works well for all measurements and is a useful addition to my kit. Use it for measuring lengths of steel girders on bridges remotely. Technology impressive, but not quite where I need it yet. in my talk with a Leica technician, it was alluded to that there would be something akin to a hand portable total station coming out in the near to medium future.

Product delivered without delay, after sale service is great. At time of purchase, I was only able to purchase 4 instead of the 5 I needed but that is a minor issue. Will order again.
