Irwin 3111002 Door Lock Installation Kit

Solid kit, good value
This is a very good kit for its stated purpose. I have installed two deadbolt locks with this kit and I am very happy with the results relative to money spent. It takes the guess work out of your major hole drilling (the included drill bits are great) and is very secure on the frame (once reinforced with screws as designed). If I have one gripe, the plastic guide for drilling an outline for your chisel is a little flimsy, but does the job. Affordable and does exactly what it is meant to do - takes the guess work out of installing a new deadbolt.

A good aid for the job
I used this to install 2 locks and overall it worked well. I think it’s most useful for lining up the holes to each other and in relation to the door edge. However once I started on a metal door things got a little more difficult. I would suggest using the guide to score the door on both sides then just remove it. I found it was more in my way than a help at that point. But, it was worth the money to avoid doing any measuring and to guide the drill getting started. As others have stated the router bit and guide are a challenge to get clean edges. Plus my plates were square not rounded. It was far easier to make sharp edges using chisels (I suggest a 3 pack in different sizes, but at least 1/2” and 1”). However I guess if you need rounded edges there’s no way around it; maybe just use it on the corners though and a chisel for the edges?Overall this is a good deal; you get the guide plus the hole saws and the router bit if you want to use it. But, you still need chisels to get the job done so it’s not quite a complete kit.

Worked great!
It worked great for cutting the holes for my door knob into my new door. It was a bit flimsy but if you take your time and don't rush it will work out great as it did for me.

Update: good for wood doors, not for metal
Updated 4/8/2020In my original review, I was retrofitting wood doors with 70 year old locksets so the holes in the doors just needed enlarged, but the door frame plates were fine. This kit says it is good for wood or metal so I decided to add a deadbolt to a metal skinned door I installed in the garage. DISASTER! as soon as the center pilot drill started to pierce the skin of the door, IT BENT and took out the plastic hole fixture with it. This is a standards metal skin with wood and foam core. It should not have stopped a bit and even worse, bent it. In doing this, the outer hole saw jumped an scraped up the surface of the metal door.I did use the router bit and fixture for the door frame this time and it was ok. The plastic fixture shifts while you use it so after the first cut I learned that I have to hold it firmly with one hand while I run the router bit/drill with the other hand.I'm dropping this review from 5 stars to 3 stars, (not down to 1 star) because it is still fine for wood. Just know that it is too weak for metal.-----Original review:Kit is complete with all the tools you'll need. The main fixture is plastic and secures in place with two screws that line up with the striker plate (well thought out in that respect). But the plastic is a little weak so you need to be a little cautious not to flex it or your hole may be off a little. It wasn't a problem for me (and I'm not an expert) but just noticed the weakness. When the hole saw punches through to the opposite side, it did cut into the fixture a little, but again, if you only want to do maybe 5 doors, this tool is adequate.I am remodeling an old home and used this so far to cut 3 holes in old solid wood doors. The new holes line up perfectly with the modern handle set. I have 9 doors total and I'm hopeful the fixture will survive, but I have no regrets and if it doesn't last through them all, I'd still feel like I got my money's worth and would buy a second one to finish the project.I did not need to cut hinges or cut recesses for the striker plate so I can't rate the router bit, but it looks like a good template and bit.

Great tool
Was kinda sceptical about it do to other bad reviews but I pulled the trigger anyhow and I'm please I did bc this thing works great. Easy to use and simple. It probably wouldn't hold up if you were doing more than 15-20 doors but anything below it should be fine.

Worked well
This worked excellent for what I needed it to do but since it's plastic looks like I may only get one more use out of it. Wish it was more durable for multiple uses and would even pay more if it were so I don't have to keep re buying it to do a house full of doors.

Worked well enough
It's not the most sturdy product, but it worked well enough to drill the door handle hole. The backside of the template cracked and broke off while drilling; however, that did not effect the outcome. The drill bit was hard to remove the drilled wood out of, but I was able to tap it out. For the price and functionality I think it was a pretty good product.

Kind of flimsy
The reason I bought this product from amazon was that the same one in my local hardware store was $37. But I am disappointed in the quality of this item. I think it would be fine if you are doing a couple of doors at most, but anymore than that it just doesn't hold up. I could not use the hinge guide on the door jamb, it is sized wrong for that. Worked okay on the door itself.
