This is a real 'keeper' and worth its weight in gold (tone)!
My husband thought he had died and gone to heaven when he got this gorgeous banjo as his 60th birthday gift from me. It is indeed a beautiful instrument. For several years he has mentioned his desire to have another banjo, as he made a mistake when he gave up his first banjo to one of our sons many years ago and later our son sold it. I managed to find out what kind of banjo he might buy if he had the money, and that's when he mentioned the Gold Tone CC-100R Cripple Creek. So as a loving and dutiful wife, I purchased him one as a birthday surprise. This banjo sounds amazing! My husband couldn't be more tickled. Prior to getting it he had been listening to youtube versions of the same banjo, and even they sounded good. But once he played his very own, the sound was even more impressive. He grinned so wide I thought his face was gonna crack! Additionally the banjo is absolutely perfect in every way--no blemishes, mars, scratches, discoloration--it is just a gorgeous piece of workmanship. It arrived tuned--go figure! I doubt if my husband will ever upgrade as he is a weekend player on all of his guitars and instruments and doesn't do gigs, but for his needs and happiness this gem put a real smile on his face and he couldn't be more pleased, so it's definitely a keeper!

Great sound, great value
After a lot of research my family finally pulled the trigger on the Gold Tone CC-100R for a Christmas Gift for my father. What pushed me over the top for this particular banjo was the solid maple construction (other banjos around this price point used laminate over mystery "wood") and the stellar reviews I've seen here and elsewhere.I'm not a music guy, so I took a gamble on this and it paid off. A day never goes by that my father doesn't pick the banjo up and noodle on it for an hour or two. He says it plays great, the sound is lovely, and for an enthusiastic amateur, it's a great instrument.Sadly I can't give a more detailed review than this because I am not a musician, but it seems to have been a big hit!

GoldTone CC-100R
I am playing banjo for approximately a year. I bought a Fender 54 from Guitar Center and the neck was loose on it. So I took it back. On a side note, Guitar Center put it right back on the shelf for someone else to buy. I wouldn't buy another instrument from there again. Anyways, I then bought a Washburn B-11 banjo for $459. I thought it was a very good instrument. Although, I did have to set it up myself. I did a great job and it was a good banjo. Needless to say I was satisfied. Then, I decided to see what GoldTone was all about. I decided on the CC-100R because it was in my price range. When I tuned it up and started pickin' I had to stop because I couldn't believe the quality of sound coming from this thing. It FAR beat every aspect of my Washburn. Everything that I could ask for was there: Tone, resonance, perfect pitch, string height and a perfect amount of sustain. Now, mind you, I don't have that much experience in all of the previous above mentioned qualities in a banjo. I only know what I have played in music stores and my own Washburn; and I don't know if I got lucky and someone that day my banjo was built was feeling like an over-achiever that day. But, I still can't believe what a quality banjo I have sitting on a music stand in my music room. I'm not trying to sway your decision, I'm just giving you my opinions of my experience of my new instrument.Disclaimer: I'm am not saying that Washburn manufactures sub par instruments, so don't sue me.But Guitar Center sucks and I stand by that statement.

Quality made
It checked all the boss needed to be a quality instrument. Got it for my wife for Christmas she loves it. I turned it for her, holds it really well. Great sound.

Fantastic Banjo
Great tones from a respected name. I can tell the difference when I play someone's other brands. You have a long way up to go to find a better sounding banjo. I in fact have bought it again.

My first banjo
I've had this for a few years now and it has been a fantastic banjo to learn with. It's my first one and I haven't had any problems. It sounds great and is fun to play.

So happy
Previously owned the Gold Tone CC-100+ and loved it. It was my first banjo and it was a ton of fun starting to learn. I saw the 100R online for a really good price, so I couldn't resist. I sold the 100+ and bought this one and have been very happy with it. The sound is so good. I haven't played any other banjos, so I don't have anything to compare it to, so it could suck compared to other banjos. I am very happy with it though.

Sweet pick
Everything came intact, I was very satisfied. Went to my local music store and bought a DVD/book combo to help me learn (which you could probably buy here) but I definitely recommend this for beginners like myself.
