A Bargain at Twice the Price!
I cannot in good conscience give this book anything less than five stars because I've become totally dependant on it in the year since I bought it. It actually has more than 501 verbs available because there are pages and pages of additional verbs in the handy index provided. Every page has not only every possible conjugation (14 in all! How DO native speakers manage, Mon Dieu!) but common expressions as well! Soooooooo handy. I have learned tons from this book simply in passing, by often stopping to read a random entry when I meant to look up something else entirely. However, there are some drawbacks -- for one thing, the writers waste several of the 501 entries with verbs that are really just compunds of other verbs -- why bother with "permettre" and "promettre" for instance, when they are both conjugated EXACTLY like "mettre"? Likewise with "aller" vs. "s'en aller" or "venir" vs. "devenir" or even "convaincre" vs. "vaincre" -- just remember to add the new beginning and you're good to go, yo.Also, I've found over a half dozen verbs that don't appear anywhere in the book, which meant I had to guess at their conjugations. Quelle dommage! The final drawback is the book's layout/setup. The cover of the fifth edition brags that it now has a "two-color layout." Well whoopee, but more colors wouldn't have killed them, particularly in the appendices, where all the bold entries seems to blend and blur together. It also wouldn't have killed them to spring for some thumbholds or maybe color-coded page edges so that you can flip to the section of the book you need with greater ease. I would have considered the extra fifty cents or whatever that added to the cover price money WELL spent.Don't be deterred by these mostly minor gripes though -- this book is a must-have for any serious French-as-a-second-(or 3rd or 4th or what have you)-language student who doesn't happen to possess a photgraphic memory or an off-the-charts IQ. It can only help you, trust me. Matter of fact, I wouldn't be surprised if it could even be of help to native speakers -- after all, who could *possibly* remember the passe anterieur of "reparaitre" off the top of her head???

Learn to Conjugate Verbs & Increase Your Vocabulary, Too
If, like me, it's been 20 or more years since you've taken French...or maybe you're still in that classe de francais, then you're in for a treat. Here are all the French verbs you'll ever need, and then some! 501 French Verbs has all the common verbs, both irregular and regular, laid out in all their tenses. Take a look and after a while, you begin to really get a feel for how the regular verbs work, too!I originally bought this book only a few years ago when we had a Belgian exchange student coming to live with us. I wanted to write to her French-speaking family in their native tongue. I used this book not only to help me get the tenses straight with the verbs I did know, but also to discover verbs I had no familiarity with.In this way, I greatly increased my vocabulary - a great help for someone like me, who hasn't stepped foot in a classroom in over 20 years, and who doesn't have ready access to a French tutor. Below the 14 tenses, there is a section where the verb is shown in context along with words and expressions relating to it. As I said, this greatly aided in expanding my vocabulary and understanding of the French language and increased my overall fluency in the language. What better compliment could you give a dictionary than that?

A good survival tool :)
Are you trying to learn french?. If so, this is one of the books you must have. Why? Simply because it makes your life easier. This book doesn't explain why verbs are conjugated in a certain way, but it helps you to learn merely by showing how 501 french verbs are conjugated. Is that enough? Well, by itself no, because we are not parrots who must repeat whatever they are told without understanding what they say (that, despite the opinion of some, not all, french teachers). However, if you have a good textbook, a terrific dictionary, some listening tapes and "501 French Verbs: Fully Conjugated in All the Tenses in a New Easy-To-Learn Format Alphabetically Arranged" (long title :)!!), you'll probably end up speaking french more or less well. This edition is bilingual (french-english), so if you don't know the meaning of some verbs in french you'll still have the translation in english. Another thing worth pointing out is that each verb has lots of examples (with different tenses). I found out that to be particularly useful...So, what to do?. If you can, buy this book, or ask a friend to lend it to you. It is not overly entertaining (as a matter of fact it is quite boring), but it helps you to deal with some of those awful verbs that sometimes make you wish for the nonexistence of the french language. On the whole, a good survival tool :)

Ce livre, c'est extra!
I have studied French for over six years and I am putting in an order for this book -- for the third time. This is the best verb compilation of verb conjugation charts I have come across. Each verb is completely conjugated into all 14 tenses in French. For those just learning French the book has detailed explanation of when and how each conjugation is used. The appendices are just as valuable as the conjugation charts and include idiomatic expressions, and which infintives are preceded with à and de.It is a bit pricy (that's why it is rated 4 stars instead of 5), but is still a wise investment for the serious student of French.

This book is a requirement for any serious student of French. While one might come across a verb not contained in the book, the major ones certainly are, and every possible tense--simple and compound--is given. The bottom of each page contains more uses of the verb, whether in idioms or other expressions. The back of the volume is replete with other information.

Simply Brilliant
Clear, concise, plenty of practical examples, easy to read and actually quite interesting, given how the book motivates you towards appendices full of useful phrases and so on. A useful section at the front explaining English and French tenses and moods. I am a couple of years into my adult studies and this book will I am sure help enable me to move up a notch in ability. So far I have not been able to fault it, beyond being thick, but that is good, if bad for carting around with you.

Extremely dirty and worn 501 French Verbs book
Very disappointed. The item was described as in a "VERY GOOD CONDITION", no wear and tear, etc. the book was VERY DIRTY, the cover terribly worn out, and had lots of creases, lots of the pages were folded at the tip. The edge of every page was dirty. The description should have said fair condition, no writing in pages, but lots of wear and tear, hence, dirty on edges and cover.
