The Ghazi Attack

One of top fifty movies out of around six thousand watched by me.

Running time a bit more than should have been for the story and its depiction. But only a bit. It could have been 5 stars. An action film without conventional action. A story made interesting within the claustrophobic confines of a submarine.

Nothing to say about how was the movie. I like the material delivered, like the packaging and disc quality. I always buy movies from online shopping websites, or watch from amazonprime or netflix. I think it is better for the industry and yes in my personal opinion piracy is a big crime. So buy movie disc if you like to make your collection really good.

Absolutely brilliant treatment of the Ghazi Attack and the destruction of Ghazi. Also, the need to think outside the box. Ghazi was far superior to our boats but we managed to sink it. Worth seeing. You need to run it at least twice, in order to get the nuances.

Movie is just Okay

The Ghazi Attack has its moments, and might have been a decent entertainer, but for:1. Fatally dull stereotype casting and performances (Om Puri phones it in from long distance, and Kay Kay's psychotic submarine captain acts like it would be a bad idea to put him in command of a paper boat).2. No one seems to have taken the trouble to get comfortable with the jargon and demeanour of naval personnel. The immersion factor (ha!) is poor.3. If it's a desi war movie, it must drill patriotism through your skull.4. Submarine is lit up like a Vijay Sales showroom. Hey guys, what about some dramatic light and shadow contrasts instead of this flat digital look?5. They made up some "Crimson Tide meets Border" bunkum and totally ignored the actually interesting naval strategy manoeuvres that led to the Ghazi being lured into the Bay of Bengal by making it believe the INS Vikrant was going to be stationed there.Reliance's DVD has no technical issues, but the source material looks flat and dull. Sound is adequate but not thrilling. No watermarks / logos and no anti-smoking disclaimers DURING the film. No extras.

The film is good but print quality is not good .Please inform me when blue ray print comes.

The cd had a damage which was getting stuck when played.Huge disappointment as we could not watch movie fully.

I love this movie.

I like Indian movies. This is a pretty good one. It even has the typical singing, even in a sub movie. However, nothing in the movie about submarine design, operation, navigation, equipment, crewing, or techniques attempts to be accurate. It is just actors in make believe sets. I was a crewmember on a GUPPY IA conversion of a US Navy Balao class WW II submarine in the early 1960s, about a decade before this incident occurred. The Pakistani sub Ghazi was an economical Fleet Snorkel conversion of a late WW II Tench class American sub. The two classes are similar enough to be the same throughout, but the conversions differ somewhat. The Ghazi was on loan to Pakistan at the time covered in the movie. The Indian submarine Karanj (S 21), an ex-Soviet Union Foxtrot boat, was nowhere near the Ghazi at any time during the period of the movie. The whole story was made up for dramatic effect. The actual interesting history is available on the internet. The self-sinking of the Ghazi was probably caused by the premature explosion of mines it was attempting to lay. The two movie boats have numerous flaws: crewmembers standing around with no operational duty (a sub underway requires constant helm, buoyancy, depth, and trim control from multiple stations), all emergencies and diving procedures seem to be accomplished with the same three dinky handheld valve wheels throughout the film, everyone talks far too much when in reality only the Chief of the Boat, or first engineer, and the skipper and his few officer assistants would be doing the thinking and giving orders, the engines are being used while fully submerged, even below snorkel depth, the interior spaces and compartments are far too big and clean (the term Pigboat is commonly used for a reason), the token battery shown briefly is about the size of a car battery, when the lower hull would be full of about 250 footlocker size cells, electrical equipment still works after being flooded by seawater, torpedoes can be effortlessly loaded in seconds by a couple of crewmembers, and the Ghazi doesn't even have a rudder or propeller struts. The list goes on, but you get the idea. A nice touch is that even though their captain scowls constantly, the Pakistani crewmwmbers aren't automatically presented as the bad guys. I enjoyed watching this movie to see how they would represent the environment and action, but if you want a decent submarine movie, it should be Das Boot. Just ignore all the theatrical yelling and screaming, as under stress, most well trained military personnel either freeze and do nothing, or quietly continue to function and perform their duty.
