Nearly all the species produce brightly colored, unusually shaped spikes of small flowers surrounded by a type of colored leaf tissue called a bract. White Candles is a very nice cultivar that grows a bit taller than most, and great choice for brightening up shaded areas. It is a fast growing plant, that reaches a mature height of about 3 feet fairly quickly, and so is a good choice for background and boundary plantings in light to moderately shaded areas.
