Surprisingly good!

Those of you familiar with cheap Chinese manufacturing may be questioning this product. I did not have high hopes, but I'm glad to say that this product went together well, and functions perfectly! I opted to spend the extra money for the "new version," but I have no idea how it differs from the old.The item is a polyethylene box that packs flat, and assembles somewhat like a pizza box--with metal snaps to hold it together. The six included backgrounds (made of a woven plastic fiber, not cheap paper or cardboard) hang on the back of the box using two plastic tabs. Two strips of LEDs illuminate the subject well, and kill shadows except for a faint shadow at the bottom. This could probably be eliminated with additional lighting, if you're so inclined. A dual-headed USB micro cable (included) supplies power to the LEDs, but you'll need a phone wall charger, USB power bank, laptop, or similar to provide power to the cable. There is a circular flap in the top of the box that allows top-down photos to be taken. The whole thing disassembles and folds up to about a 12" square that's about 1/2" thick. It includes a storage pouch, which is a nice addition, and features the "Slow Dolphin" name which makes me laugh every time I see it.Certainly, you could DIY something similar--but probably not at this price. And of course you could spend more, and get a more finished, professional looking product--but your results would be the same, so why would you? This is an inexpensive, lightweight, packable light box that gets the job done. If it ever breaks, I'll buy it again for sure.

Not bad, not great

I like the concept of this portable lightbox. As w most things, some tweaking could be done. Its a small box....use it for jewelry, small models, etc. I found larger trinket boxes (6" length) to be even to big to use in this lightbox without to much interference. The LED lighting is very bright so no additional lighting will be needed. Youre able to select which led bar is on or have both lit at same time. I found this helpful as some shinier objects picked up the bulb glare, regardless of where object was placed, when both LED bars were lit (see pic example). When finding your powersource, make sure to not overamp your usb cables and blow the LEDS. They are 1amp LED bars. I have a 2.4 dual port USB wall hub w 2 standard 10ft micro usb cables as my set up. Box is the sturdiness you would expect from thin plastic sheeting folded and snapped into place (think same material as the novelty origami/puzzle lampshades thatvwere popular a few years ago). So long as youre not being rough, sturdiness wont be an issue. Snaps are a better upgrade than from the magnet closures in other brands. The backdrops are adhered by "hanging" onto small cut "pegs" in the back plastic panel. Backdrops are so so...not my material of choice and texture will certainly be picked up in photos...but they dont seem to collect lint/hair/etc easily. The top "circle" for overhead shooting is....well...uselss? Its just a disk cut from same plastic that sits loose over the camera hole. If your circle gets bent or warped, it allows for light leaks...this disk really serves no function in my opinion. Took a front picture with and without disk in place...no difference. That being said, I had both LED bars on. There may be a slight diff when having only 1 bar on. This def saves time on having to set up larger, more proper, light boxes/tents...but depending on what youre photographing...saving time may not be worth it. All in all, it works well for what I bought it for (macro shots and small jewelry photos). For $15 its not a bad set up by any means and its another gadget for my photo equipment "arsenal"...but I wont be getting rid of or neglecting my proper light box anytime soon. Gave 5 stars bc while its kinda "gimmicky", it does exactly as its marketed to do, price is fair, and its easy to use.

Great for the most part...

I needed something smaller and portable for small product images. Testing with a toy train. The lights are nice and bright and using a galaxy phone for the photos I only increased the exposure slightly to avoid that grey look.Easy to put together, portable, and can power it from my laptop. The build is nothing special but it works well. The material is made from a plastic which seems like the material that my bigger light boxes back drop is made of. Which leads me to:I do not like this included backdrops. The color is fine and it attaches easily but it has a pattern on it that looks like a paper towel that shows up in the photos. To fix this I took a normal sheet of paper and used that as the backdrop instead. There is no diffuser and being this is small the shadows are pretty harse.Since I used normal paper as a backdrop I folded the included white backdrop up and taped it to the top and used that as a diffuser which worked quite well and didn't really affect the brightness of the lights. The snaps work well in holding this together and I had no problem with the light connections as it's obvious care should be take when plugging in.Overall it is worth the purchase, I am happy with it and I will end up keeping and using. I would have given 5 stars except for the paper towel looking backdrop.
