How does the 12mm compare to the 17mm?

I have both lenses and use them both on two ep5 camera bodies for travel. The 12mm is the best of the two and should be for the difference in price. However both are great lenses. My 12mm is the first edition which was made in Japan. The China version is probably no different. Definitely a great lens for travel.

Will this work with an Olympus OM-D E-M5?

Oh yes. Perfectly. Highly esteemed, impecable 12mm lens for m4/3. I prefer instead of $ 800 the $ 125 Panasonic 14mm 2.5. I cannot see the difference in the pictures. With the difference buy the Panasonic 20mm 1.7, the sharpest lens I know and the 45mm Olympus 1.8, a really fun mid tele!

I like to shoot super close, what is the closet I can get with this lens?

You can focus to within eight inches away of your subject. But remember that this is a wide angle, 24mm equivalent lens, so even at a close up distance, you will get more into your frame than you would with a longer lens. You must also be aware of potential wide-angle distortion.
