OK, here's the deal:This thing is designed to alert you (probably in the middle of the night when you are SLEEPING!) that your whole house electricity has shut-off! ... If the juice fails in the middle of the day, and you are AT HOME, you'll probably know it::: i.e. T.V., lights, radio etc will go off... If you ARE NOT AT HOME....? Tough!!! ... This won't alert you... . (You need then, to spend thousands of dollars for an alert system to your I-Phoney or whatever....) ... THIS ain't THAT.... If you're buying THIS to alert you of your FREEZER failing in the garage, ya might wanna get your electrical system checked. This won't make enough noise to alert you that your freezer (in the garage) has failed, (unless your garage has paper-thin-walls...). That's NOT what it's FOR...What it IS for, is to alert you with a blinking light and a fairly loud beeping alarm system that your ELECTRICITY in your HOUSE has FAILED!... Put it in your BEDROOM, plug it in, and leave it alone... If your electricity goes off, it will emit a fairly loud beeping sound (and unless you are deaf, no offense to the hearing impaired, I am, too!) it will WAKE YOU UP (is it a FIRE TRUCK? NO... but it will wake you...) also with a blinking light, alerting you to the fact that your electricity in your house has GONE OFF!!!Might save you some spoiled food (in the summer,) or frozen pipes (in the winter,) or a fire or security-system-failure (ANYTIME) because your electricity has been cut-off, for whatever-r-r-r reason....Many of the comments below expect this thing to alert you to your freezer in the barn (1/2-mile away) or that it needs to be louder, because you can't hear it above your BLARING STEREO!!!... Nope.... Not gonna happen with this....14-bucks... plug it in.... leave it.... If your juice goes off... (AND YOU ARE AT HOME!!!) .... you'll know about it... especially (plugged into the bedroom outlet) if you are sleeping... It's plenty LOUD... It's plenty BRIGHT... It's-a-plenty-cheap-insurance-warning system to alert you when your power goes off!.... Very simple.....Plugged mine in... Let it charge-up over 8 hours (I read the instructions ... WHOA! ... now there's a change... read the instructions!!) ... then I un-plugged it to "check it out." .... FANTASTIC.... audible alarm beeped... light worked..... HECK-UV-A-DEAL!Just what I wanted.... Just what I ordered.... WORKS JUST LIKE IT WAS ADVERTISED TO DO...Thank You, Reliance.... Thank You, Amazon.......... (And no, it WON'T automatically dial the police and tell them to come to your house.... sorry... bad-joke!!!..... )IT WORKS!!!!..... very simple....... It works......UPDATE: 3/16/2014::: Oh, yeah, it's loud enough! .... We had a city-wide blackout (at night) on 3/14-15/2014, and from the living room, I heard this alarm go beep-beep-beep, and it was the first little light I went to retrieve. Once the juice finally came back on, 7 hours later, I plugged it back into the wall, ready for the next go-round... Yeah, it's loud enough... Yeah... Getcha one....SECOND UPDATE: 9/22/14 .... Another power-trip..... juice went out at night, late last week.... Briefly at my house, longer in other parts of town. Beeper "went-off" just like it is supposed to, woke me up, emer-light came on, checked through the house, then the power came back on again after about a minute.... did its JOB! ... Sad to see the item is unavailable as of this date. Glad I had mine! ... but, hey! re-setting all those digital clocks IS A BUMMER!!!

This is a good product and it does what it was designed to do. Just be aware of it's limitations. This will not likely wake you if you are asleep, and I'm glad of that. There are power failure "Alarms" available that are loud enough to give you a heart attack if that's what you want. This little unit is just something to make you aware of a wall outlet circuit power failure.I was reluctant to buying this product after reading the reviews posted by others who claim the alarm is terribly weak. But for the inexpensive price and special free shipping offer if I spent over $xx.xx, I bought 2 of them to get the free shipping offer. I basically paid about $5 for the second one.I bought this to plug into one of my bathroom GFCI outlets to let me know if it trips because the circuit also feeds my garage freezer. I have already had to deal with thawed freezer food and wanted something to let me know within a reasonable amount of time that the power to the freezer has gone out.To all those who complained about the very low alarm volume, you all must have a serious hearing problem. It is loud enough to hear throughout most of my 5 bedroom house. I am a 57 year old guy, so you can't say that it's too low for older people. Seriously, you wouldn't want this thing to belt out a loud alarm if the power goes out anyway, it's just not necessary. If your power goes out, you'll know it. Just keep it plugged into a place you will be passing a few times throughout the day.

I read all the reviews prior to purchasing this item. We live in the mountains of NC where power failures are common especially in the winter. I wanted something that would alert me if we lost power in the evening since everything is electric. In the event of a power failure it is necessary to build a fire and turn on a auxiliary propane heater to provide heat and prevent water lines from freezing. This unit provides this assurance. Even though the warning sound is not very loud, the combination of this and the LED is sufficient to wake me since I have the unit in our bedroom. Very useful product.

This is a handy gadget that will tell you if your power or a particular circuit has gone out. I bought it for peace of mind to let me know while I'm sleeping if the power would go out during a storm so that I could check to make sure my battery operated sump pump was working correctly.The only drawback is that it is not very loud. No loader than a clock radio alarm or door chime in your car. It almost certainly needs to be in the same room you are to hear it. At least the same floor.It will work for what I need it to as most of the time if you are up you will know you lost power I want it to alert me while I am sleeping and it will wake you. But if you expect to monitor an individual circuit, lets say in your basement while you are upstairs, you will never hear it unless you have bat ears.

I like this and think it would wake me up if the power went out. It has a light/beeper for when power does go out. I can see and use to find a flash light. To start generator or to take cover.
