I bought this for my wife because she is fair skinned and doesn't like to be out in the sun very long when at the beach. I searched through several of the other types of umbrellas and beach canopies, but couldn't decide on one that looked like it would give her much shade. I kept coming back to this one, but was still skeptical based on reviews that it was difficult to setup and was afraid she'd have some difficulty if she tried to do this alone on the beach. It was ordered on Saturday and received on Tuesday (/shameless plug to Amazon Prime and the awesome shipping), so that insured us plenty of time to set it up before we leave for the beach on Saturday. I wasn't home when it arrived, but my wife was so excited, she had already unpacked it and had it setup in our living room. She said it took her roughly 10 minutes to setup and seemed to be simple enough to handle even if there was wind on the beach. I think she was most excited because it is definitely way bigger in person than it is shown on the website. There is plenty of room to sit back into the tent area and be completely covered, or you can sit just under the shade and allow the sun to tan your legs. There is also plenty of room for your chairs, beach bag, and anything else you need to store out of the sun or in a safe place. Once she had her fun with it, she wanted to time how long it would take her to break it down and pack up. There were only a few snags, but still a breeze and not as difficult as other reviews have claimed. - The biggest issue is the mesh that your poles go through and when inserting or removing, they tend to get caught in the holes. I think a better design in that area (making the pole holes solid fabric) would assist in getting the poles in and out quicker and without them coming apart at the hinges. Still, she got the poles out and back in the bag in around 10 minutes with some of my help. -The only other MAJOR pain was the bag that the tent and accessories comes. Good luck getting the tent folded back down small enough to perfectly fit into that bag. It's almost like folding a fitted sheet and we know only witches can do that. She eventually got it tucked into the bag, but if you're hot on the beach and flustered from fighting with the poles and mesh, you're going to just shove it to make it fit which can lead to tears if you zip over it. Her recommendation and probably her own solution, was to just invest in a cheap beach bag big enough to hold the poles and the tent, so that way you can get it rolled down as far as you can and tie each end with the included plastic ties. It's not that bulky and the poles/stakes/sand bags all come in their own bags so it's easy clean up. I will do an updated review in a week or so once she has had time to enjoy it on the beach. So far, she thinks this is going to be a great investment and will be used many more times in the future!

I purchased this shade after doing much research and reading many reviews, and could not be happier. There is a good reason it got so many positive reviews. One of the best things about this shade vs. a beach umbrella is that it can be put away in a very convenient and compact bag with handles. The set up was easy. We use Coleman tents for camping, so we know how they work. If you are new to setting up tents, I suggest doing a trial run at home. Once you figure it out, setting it up on the beach will be easy. The shade consists of the fabric part and 3 folding poles. The poles need to be assembled (takes 2 seconds) and slipped inside stitched pockets on the outside of the tent, then the ends of the poles are threaded into the holes on the bottom of the shade. This creates a standing shell shape. The shade's front has a large zippered door. In the fully open position it is meant to be laid flat at the entrance, to protect you from the sand. The back of the tent has another zippered door. It can be left closed, or you can open it for more ventilation. The solid fabric part can be rolled up and secured with buttons, leaving just the bug screen part open. The shade is very light, so in very windy conditions it might fly away if not properly secured. For that Coleman provided several bags that can be filled with sand to weigh it down, and extra long steaks to anchor it to the ground. The floor of the shade is thin, so I would recommend bringing a beach blanket or a towel to lay on. The shade is roomy, with high ceiling, and fit my husband and I very comfortably, I think it would be ideal for a family with small kids. It provides SPF 50, and if you are fully inside of it it, you are shaded on all sides, unlike being under a beach umbrella. I appreciate well thought out products, and I really liked that waterproof sheet of instructions is stitched right inside of the carrying bag. The last but not least, this lovely shade turns into your very own private changing room at the end of the day. I zipped both doors closed, and changed very comfortably out of the wet bathing suit, much better than a dirty public bathroom!!! I would recommend this shade for anyone who has children, or loves the beach but hates roasting in the sun, or wants more sun protection.

We purchased this item to use on the Outer Banks in North Carolina to shelter babies and small children from the sun while at the beach. Assembly is fairly simple but takes under about 10 minutes and 2 people. It comes with 6 steel wire spikes to hold it down, and while it has withstood some decent breezes over the first half-dozen uses I am skeptical about it not blowing away in the stronger winds that can come up along the Carolina coast; I likely will pick up longer spikes at the hardware store before I really have to test that out. Small spikes notwithstanding, my experience with Coleman tents in general is that they structurally withstand wind well, and this light-weight tent uses the same type of construction seen in their heavier camping tents. There is a lot of shaded floor space and not only was it good for shading kids, there was also plenty of room for our cooler and other things we needed to keep out of the sun. An adult (e.g. nursing mom or granny) can sit comfortably in a beach chair inside the tent need be. The light color reflects the sun well and it is noticeably cooler inside the tent than out, and opening up the screened "back window" is great to promote circulation as well. I would bring a long a small hand brush to sweep it out at the end of the day unless you don't mind packing it away with sand in it. Stowed away it is a remarkably small and light-weight package that is not too difficult to repack as long as you fold and roll it up neatly. Definitely recommend this tent for use at the beach or park.

I was hesitant to purchase this based upon some of the complaints, but having assembled this today (in the house) I do not foresee any quality problems or other issues, and expect this tent will last for years to come. Assembly is just like a normal tent, with fiberglass rods that assemble into a longer pole. There are three poles, each about 6 to 8 feet long assembled. The poles slide into mesh sleeves, which are less durable than nylon fabric, but prevent sand from filling the sleeves. Just take your time during tent assembly and disassembly, do not force the rods, and the mesh should not be a problem. As for the tent itself, it is quite large, easily fitting two adults, possible three. In the back is a door/window with a solid panel and screen, depending upon which zipper you open (there are two on the back door, one for the nylon flap, one for the screen). The large front door also zips shut for privacy/changing clothes. The carry case is also nice and well made, with handles, to carry everything in a compact form. This tent is a really great item, and I will update this review should there be any issues, which I do not foresee given the nice quality of this tent. The tent is made in Bangladesh. UPDATE: MAY 5 2013 We took this to the beach, where the conditions were windy. Set up required two adults to fight against the wind. Total set up time must have been 10 minutes, however, once set up it provided shelter from the wind and sun. We stayed all day at the beach until almost sunset, and without the tent the wind and sun would have forced us to leave much sooner. Some strong gusts did occasionally push the tent sides in a bit, but they popped back out as the wind subsided. On windy days, I would not leave the tent without a person inside to prevent it blowing away. The included sand bags, which we used, would not have prevented the tent from blowing away. Taking the tent down was much easier, taking about 2 minutes. My review above still stands, but I wanted to update with how it performs on a windy day.

We've used this at a hot air balloon festival and a beach and it has held up. We were staying at a condo with a private beach, so we were actually able to leave the tent set up for about 4-5 days. It held up surprisingly well, especially considering the last two days were extremely windy with a tropical storm blowing in. It never blew away, it never came out of the ground (even though we had done a shoddy job putting stakes in-we forgot the mallet). I have to say the fact that we could just leave it up was appealing, because I set it up by myself, while trying to keep an eye on a three year old, on a very windy day. It took me probably about 20 minutes, and wasn't a grueling task, but definitely a little tricky. I will note that I stopped several times, to tend to the kid, and to move to a more desirable spot, etc. And if I had to, it wouldn't have been "too much" to set it up daily. Provides great shade, could work as a single person tent. Some people have complained about it being "hot" inside, I didn't have a problem with this, but we sat in the doorway, partly in tent and partly under the little canopy, using the tent space behind us for cooler and toy storage. We were completely shaded. We usually opted to tuck the door under the tent so we could put our feet in the sand. It was very comfortable, I spent hours in that thing. Good for toddler naps, emergency changing rooms for diapers or swimsuits, and it was a great storage shed for our stuff during the week so we didn't have to drag it back and forth. It also served well at the festival, which was in a grassy field. It's still holding up great! No tears or damage despite being left on beach, and being used frequently. It's pretty easy to set up, slide three poles in, ta-da. We tied the sand bags around the stakes, and didn't use the lines and it still held up. I did practice setting it up at home in the yard and letting the kids play in it a couple of times just so I wasn't trying to read instructions and learn how to set it up on a windy beach. I would recommend this, probably save you some grief.

I was back and forth between a shady tent or a giant umbrella. I couldn't be happier that I went with this choice. It takes a few minutes to set up, I'm sure It'll faster as time goes by. The quality is definitely Coleman. We took this to the beach on a very sunny, but windy day. The set up was a challenge as the wind kept us on our toes. The anchors were useless with so much wind, but we had coolers and bags that we used to weigh everything down. We spent most of the day, half in and half out playing card games, reading books and enjoying the beach. It was perfect for 2 adults and a 9 year old. But I did spend some time people watching. What I saw made me love our shady tent more! I watched as people clung to their umbrellas as they tipped and flopped. I watched as peoples towels were blown over and hat flying off in a swoop. And I watched as people tried to eat without getting a gust of sand to add to their snacks. Without the sides to protect us from the wind, we would've taken part in that mess. Instead, we just got to kick back and enjoy the day. The size is way smaller and lighter than an umbrella with a good anchor would be AND it actually fits back in the bag (feel like that never happens). The cost of this little guy is totally worth it. We plan to bring it on our next camping trip and our 9 year old wants to sleep in it so we may just set it up in her room one day :) AND it actually fits back in the bag (feel like that never happens).

Just recently purchased this for the first trip to the beach with our 10 month old son. Understandably, we wanted to protect him from sun exposure. My biggest complaint about this shade was the challenge of setting it up. I was lucky enough to have three other people with me on the beach this weekend. While my wife looked after our son, it took all three of the rest of us to get this shade set up. I don't see how it would be possible for one person to get this set up by themselves. The stakes kept pulling out of the sand, and the poles are very difficult to feed through the curved liners. It took us nearly half an hour after unpacking the tent to have it set up and ready to use. My other issue was the tear down. Although admittedly much faster and easier than set up, the bag that the shade comes in was essentially useless. I meticulously folded and refolded and refolded again the shade to try to get it fit back in the bag with the poles, stakes, and empty sand bags. I just couldn't get it to fit and still allow the bag to zip. The quality of the tent was good once we got it set up, thus the three stars. It kept our son out of the shade and stood up relatively well to the slight wind on the beach. This being said, I likely won't take this back to the beach on our next trip. Instead, I've already purchased a tend from http://www.lightspeedoutdoors.com/. It's a shame this wasn't easier to use. Great idea and great way to protect little ones from the harsh sun while still letting them enjoy the beach.

I did a bunch of research before getting this, so I'll give my honest review. Having used this for several beach trips over a couple years, I seriously don't know how I ever got by without it. A couple notes I have on it: 1) Its easier to setup with two people. Doable with one person. It packs up incredibly small and light, but the trade off is its not as easy as an umbrella for initial setup 2) However it beats out a beach umbrella in that once its setup and you set your stuff in it, there is no more fiddling. Umbrellas constantly need to be readjusted and can blow over. Not so with the Beach Shade. 3) I angle it so the back of the structure is a bit into the wind. This allows the wind to blow through it when you open the back for a nice cross breeze. And its much stronger and more aerodynamic than taking the wind from the side or head on where it would catch in the door of it. I'm surprised the instructions don't talk about how to position this optimally in the wind. 4) Size easily fits two backpack beach chairs with enough room for a cooler bag and other odds and ends. I think its could accommodate three adults but it'd be pushing it. 2 adults + (1 or 2) kids would probably be ok. 5) There is a line to hang your towel from. I've also set my boogie board on the front awning A couple of my favorite user stories: 1) Were at the beach and got caught in a light rain storm. Everyone ran for cover but my wife and I waited it out in the Beach Shade and it was great to watch the rain and have the beach to ourselves! 2) My wife is pregnant and the beach would have not been possible without this as a place to get shade. 3) In general you get so much more time on the beach with this Beach Shade. Its like a home base and I feel like setting it up is a great "claimer" socially and psychologically. Typically people won't set up that close to it because for some reason there is like a social "marking territory" thing about it? Also while we are in the water we'll zip up the front of it and I feel as though people are less likely to open a tent and rummage through it. I know its not physically more secure than anything else, but socially or physiologically I think it works out to be a more secure place to have your belongings

I love it. Solid, practical, full of little pockets. It has all the Coleman attributes and is amazingly easy to set up and store. Holds quite well in high winds. It gets beautifully breezy inside with the back window, even in the hottest weather.

Last summer we bought a pop-up tent which was nothing but a nightmare. This summer we decided to go for a more traditional tent and so glad we did! This tent was sturdy (even for windy Nova Scotia beaches), we used it at Summerville and Carter's Beaches. Easy to put up, easy to take down. Poles held up strong. Screen in the back could unzip to let airflow through. Lots of room. It was perfect, I highly recommend.

Great size, will suit 5 of us! We had a smaller beach tent but we needed a bigger one. I like the green colour as most of them on the beach are blue and hard to identify! Easy to put up alone if you’re used to putting beach tents up. I like how small the tent is when put away. Highly recommend!
