The good news is VIAIR has a lot of compressors. The bad news is they have a lot of compressors! I researched most all of them and frankly almost over looked this one! Without writting a book I picked this one for the following. 1. 3/8 inch connectors as opposed to 1/4 inch on the other units. This allows the use of higher quality hoses etc. Note that the hose with this unit has no "stay out of sun" warnings and should not kink as others have reported. This is an emergency unit and the last thing I want in 5 years is a bad hose. I have had the "yellow" 1/4 in. hoses and they are pretty flimsy especially if bent wrong. 2. 3.0 CFM capacity is 20% to 50% above the 88p, 400p and 450p. While duty capacity is limited to 33% at the high CFM rate fill times should be very quick. I intend to use this for emergency use on small truck or car tires and want to limit exposure times on the road side. 3. Large battery clips will attach to the regular battery post without modification (unlike the 88p) and the heavy gauge wire should hold up. I have had cheap units with skinny wires and was always fearfull of breakage or pulling loose. Plus in the middle of the night or with a strange vehicle I really don't want to track down a smaller bolt somewhere to put the smaller clamps on. 4. Air Gauge reads in 2 lb. increments as opposed to 4 lb. on the other units. 5.Unit is compact and only 1" taller and about 3.5 inches wider than the 88P. Is smaller than both the 400p and 450p. 6. The 440 is 1.5 pounds heavier than the 400p and 450p and with the base should stay put while filling tires. There were some reports of the 88p falling over during use. With the sand plate this unit should slide if it moves at all. 7. 8 ft power cord and 25 ft hose should reach almost everyting without extensions and only minor change in unit position. 6. Heavy duty black (avoids stains showing)bag was included so I did not have to track one down. If I was going to fill a fleet of tires I suppose the 450p at the 100% duty cycle (at half the fill rate) would be the choice but that is really not my use for it. The 88p is a winner too at under $100 but I would need to track down a bag and longer cables plus the unit is way light and tall compared to width to stay upright eaisly I suspect and it has the thinner wire and smaller clamps. And last but not least the 440 looks way cool with the black motor cover, flared head fins (straight ones on the 400p and 450p) and the twin chrome pipes comming out each side I suppose all for better heat disposition! Expensive but everyting in one place with a lot of flexibility as to applications from truck tires to ballons. Update: Recieved this unit today. Very nice. Really a tool not a toy. Reinforced 10 guage wire to unit, extra filters with a side pocket in the bag to hold them or another tire gauge and even a water proof cover for the on/off switch. Air hose is 3/8 with a heavy quick connect and the air tubing is spiral re-enforced. Gauge does read in 2lb. increments with is a ton more useful than 4lb jumps as on the other units and is rubber coated. Even the connector to the tire is heavy duty with a nice machined extension so you don't bend the hose when trying to instal the connector to the valve stem. I could go on. Was a bit concerned with the size out of the box as I have to keep it in the truck. Long story short it fit perfectly (ok I had to shift the included tire too kit about six inches back) under the back jump seat in an Avalance. Great product!

Great to air up off-road tires.
I bought this to air up tires after off-roading. Airs up stock 32” Rubicon tires from 20 to 37 PSI in about a minute per tire. The product does get hot. Needs time to cool, but works great. in Line pressure gauge reads a little higher than my spot check gauge, and doesn’t give accurate reading while filling, but have found that once it reads 50 psi while running, it’s about up to street pressure. Definitely recommend this model for the CFM rating, which is why I bought this model. Topping off a typical vehicle tire takes even less time, maybe 20 seconds. Great product. A little bulky and unfortunately just a little big to fit under the back seat of a Wrangler Unlimited. But the positives more than make up for that. The 90 degree fitting for the tire valve could be a little longer, sometimes need to turn a certain way to get good seal and often touching the rim, straight type filling neck would be THE ONLY recommendation I would make. This could be an issue with a bead lock rim.

Better than your average 12v compressor
I bought this compressor so I could air my tires back up after offroading. I wont go into detail on the advantaged of doing this but theyre significant enough that I wanted to invest in a quality unit vs just getting one of those little toy cigarette lighter ones sold in most stores. I decided on the 440P vs Viair's other offerings because of the air output and i wanted something with a bit faster fill times vs a higher duty cycle or automatic shutoff. As far as the initial quality goes everything seems to be pretty well made. The way the little base attaches to the compressor itself is a little flimsy since its just 4 little rubber standoffs but I doubt they will break if I dont just beat it around. The Hose is also of pretty good quality, Better than I expected even if its the coiled type that always seems to end up tangled in a big ball after one use.As far as using this compressor It does as advertised, runs smoothly and quietly and surprisingly has no problem pumping my 7 gallon air tank to 120PSI. I can air up my 32" tires in 13 mins from 18-50 PSI with the assistance of using the air tank as a resivoir. One thing to keep in mind is the warning stickers on "extreme heat" this thing will really cook after 10-15 mins of being on. You WILL burn yourself if you touch the metal parts. The handle insulates everything but keep it in mind. You cant just throw it back in the carry case when your done it needs to cool off. Only 4 stars because Of the price, and the amount of heat generated. So far ive put it through 6 or 7 airing up cycles so it will be intersting to see how the longevity is. Overall Its a much better unit than the cheaper ones out there that i have used in the past even if they do the job for occasional use, They are no replacement for something like this that will see heavy use.***Almost 3 years later update***I have had this compressor for a few years now and so far it is still going strong just like it was when I got it. It has a permanent home in my vehicle and I have had no problems with it. There are a couple of points worth mentioning, The pressure gauge that is built into the hose is kind of worthless, it will not give an accurate reading when you are actually pumping air, infact it is not really accurate period and really only gets in the way. Also, the way the air nozzle clamps down on the valve stem can damage the threads on your valve stem. I kind of wish I had a built in air compressor setup because I always get people asking if I need any help when airing up but then again, this is very portable. The carry case has held up well also. Still highly recommended!*** 4 year update ***Onto the 4th year I have owned this. Still going strong! I use it approx once a month and to date I have not had anything break on me with this kit. The metal base this compressor stands on has gotten bent a little bit but that might have more to do with being mailed across the country in a flat rate box....twice.... The large plastic "cover" on the quick connect fitting of the hose sometimes slides around and makes it hard to disconnect the hose but no problems. Having this over a permanently installed air source is a double edged sword... It is portable. Which is nice. But... Also kind of a hassle to un bag and get set up compared to something that you just plug a hose into and go. And again it gets annoying when people pass by you with your hood up on the side of the road and stop asking if you need help. I should be happy people still offer assistance these days but you know it does get tiring and you just want to get the tires aired up and go.I honestly was not sure how this compressor would hold up to its own heat it generates as that is a major factor when it comes to wear on something like this but surprisingly it seems to be un-phased 4 years and counting.

Great compressor
I've had this for over a year now. Used it for adjusting the pressure in my truck for towing when traveling. I really like the combination bleed off and fill fitting. Quick to set up and fills tires quick. I've also used it to fill tires on dead vehicles so they can be moved. Works awesome and hasn't skipped a beat yet. Gets hot during use but thats to be expected with something that pumps out that much air.

Versatile
Had a 300p series that lasted well over 8 years of use. This 440p is no joke it works great for my airing up my 3/4 ton if/when needed in quick fashion. Nice carrying case and very happy it came with adapters for other inflatables

Good little compressor
This little compressor does exactly what it is supposed to. It airs up the tires on my gladiator nicely and quickly. It has also been handy for around the house projects, swimming pool, inflatable boats. My complaints are that the short coiled up hose that is included makes setup take longer then actually inflating the tires, (mostly the rear tires are a fight). And the odd ball fitting that is used really makes only the included hose usable with it. It is changeable and I will be doing it to make it more usable.

Works great!!!
Does exactly what I wanted. Quickly airs up 35" tires on my jeep. Can bring all 4 up from 5-10lbs to 20lbs in about 8 minutes. Would buy it again and recommend to others. I'm interested to see how it performs in the summer heat. So far heat has been a non issue as it's been winter here and the wheeling we've done has been in snow. Added benefit you can toss some snow on it if you think it's getting hot. ( I'm sure that isn't recommended in the manual- so do at your on risk lol )My only problem is now I'm airing up everyone else's tires too!

Inflated tires just as decribed
Used to air up 33” tires from 20 psi to 45 psi. Does this in short order. Quick on off clamping chuck works is great. In hindsight, maybe should have bought the Viair model that turns off automatically when the chuck is off the valve stem, but still works perfectly.
