Reliable and great value for money.
I have been building my own desktop computers for years now, and in that time, I have tried many different brands of hard drives. Western Digital drives have always been the most reliable by far for me personally. The Western Digital AV-GP 1TB Desktop SATA Hard Drive - OEM is no exception. This drive boasts a 1TB storage capacity and a speed of 5400 RPM. I purchased two of these drives: one to use as a standalone drive for files on my PC and another to replace a 500GB drive in my CCTV system. I wanted to improve the CCTV recording quality, but higher quality recordings mean larger file sizes and increased storage requirements, which my old 500GB drive couldn't meet. Although the order was dispatched immediately and arrived on time, there was an error with my order, and unfortunately, I received the wrong item. I contacted the seller, who was incredibly helpful and promptly arranged a return without any issues. Due to the urgency, I ended up buying the same drives from a different seller as the replacements weren't going to arrive in time for when I needed them. Once they arrived, I was able to install both drives in minutes in both my PC and CCTV system. They were instantly recognised, preformatted, and worked perfectly. These drives aren't the fastest on the market, but the price-to-storage ratio is excellent, and they are ideal for my needs. I have had these drives since March, and both have performed flawlessly since installation. They are very quiet and generate very little heat compared to my old Seagate drives. These drives are fantastic and offer excellent value for money! Almost all of my machines now have WD drives, some of which are older than six years and all are still going strong. I am extremely pleased with my purchase and highly recommend this item. While this drive is part of the WD AV series, initially designed for AV equipment like set-top boxes or DVRs, it excels equally as a basic storage drive, providing exceptional versatility to meet a variety of needs. Thank you for taking the time to read my review. I hope that you found it helpful and that it assists you in your decision-making. I try to be as honest and fair as possible, as those have always been the reviews that helped me the most.

A perfect replacement for a SANNCE Network Video Recorder (NVR)
My old SANNCE N44SUIT surveillance NVR stopped recording video after four years of continuous service. The hard disk had failed and needed replacing. The failed drive was a Seagate Skyhawk Lite; besides that, SANNCE recommended Western Digital drives, noting that their security/surveillance drives were good replacements. Checking out what was available, I was surprised how costly they were—until I came across the Western Digital AV-GP WD10EURX, which seemed to be the perfect budget solution. I've used Western Digital drives in PCs, laptops, and via USB connection, and have found them to be very reliable, sturdy, and long-lived. After ordering, the brand-new drive was delivered quickly and well-wrapped. Fitting it couldn't have been easier: undo the four screws securing the cover, unplug the SATA power and data cables, and undo the four screws under the NVR to remove the drive (one was hiding under a paper sticker), then simply reverse the process. (The screws are very small, so put them in an egg cup or similar after taking them out so they don't get lost.) Once I plugged everything back into the NVR and turned on the power, the NVR informed me on the connected VDU that the new hard disk was being formatted. After which—all systems go! It was a budget repair anybody should be able to do with a Phillips screwdriver in ten or fifteen minutes after which you should be done for several years. Brilliant!

Not 1TB
The HDD functions, but the data transfer speed is limited to 90 Mb/S as opposed to the 150/200 Mb/S my childhood computer's HDD does now. The usable storage space of a 1TB HDD is 931GB, and the usable space of a 500GB HDD is 465GB, which is how much storage shows as available in the partition tool. This means that they are selling second hand HDDs from over a decade ago for £48 a piece, while marketing it as 1TB when it is not. To be sure, I purchased a second one as well, thinking I bought 500GB by accident. Lo and behold, the same issue persisted. This seller is a consistent scam artist at worst, and a mismanaged seller at best. BUY AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Reformat and off you go
These drives are good for archiving photos/documents they are a very good price. It needs initialising and formatting and possibly resizing partitions depending on what you get. This can be done in windows. I have added this one to 4 other drives in a non raid DAS enclosure. All good

Almost silent drive
Not very well packed so these two drives replaced two that had failed on arrival. These two work well and test out good with WD diagnostic software. Not as fast as a 7200 rpm drive, but adequately speedy. Runs almost silently. Reliable so far.

Perfect Drive for a Tivo HD Upgrade!
My TiVo HD DVR got to the point where I often found recorded shows in pieces because the darn thing rebooted itself in the middle of recording, leaving me with two recordings and a 12 minute gap in between (for one hour shows). Its frequent reboots interrupted viewing. Researching online, it became clear to me that the hard drive was dying. After finding instructions online at Engadget and TiVoCommunity for how to replace the hard drive and transfer all my recordings from the original TiVo hard drive, I was all set to buy a Seagate drive. Then I learned that there actually is a difference among drives, and this Western Digital AV-GP WD10EURX one is designed for DVRs. While I might not think much of a noisy Seagate drive in my computer, I don't want a noisy hard drive in an appliance in my living room. According to a TiVoCommunity forum posting, WD AV-GP drives rate a 10 on a scale of 1 to 10 where 10 is the quietest. Also, these drives are designed for continuous operation 24/7 with the intent that the data they are moving is video that you are watching, so they don't split up the bytes and move them in the random ways that regular data gets transferred. One concern I had is that the original TiVo HD 160 GB drive ran at 5400 rpm and this new WD10EURX 1 TB drive runs at 7200 rpm so would the faster drive get hotter and since the TiVo HD was only designed to cool the 5400 rpm drive, would this be a problem? The answer is no. These WD AV-GP drives are "green" emitting low heat so they can easily replace the original drive without an issue. The TiVoCommunity forum posting was last updated about 5 years ago, so its description of running WinMFS, the required tool for preparing hard drives for TiVo usage, only goes up to Windows Vista, so I can add that it works with Windows 7, just right-click on WinMFS.exe and run as administrator. The forum posting warns against WD AV-GP drives saying that they can't be rebooted and will just hang. The only solution then is to unplug the power cord in the back of the TiVo and then plug it back in. This is no longer true. Western Digital must have heard about the problem and fixed it, because I was able to use the restart option from the TiVo menu to test this, and sure enough, the TiVo restarted. I did not need to unplug and replug the unit. I did not need to run the wdidle3 workaround program. After the upgrade, I went from 21 HD / 184 SD hours recording capacity to 157 HD / 1,367 SD hours. Plus, all my recordings transferred from the old drive to the new one since I ran the MFSCOPY command via the WinMFS GUI. Below are some URLs where I pieced together the information to perform the upgrade (I hope these links remain in my comments, not sure if Amazon will remove them): http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=370784#S5 http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/17/how-to-upgrade-your-tivo-hd-with-winmfs/
